CJ is fine coming off the bench. Says it’s about winning

Asked a second time about the possibility of coming off the bench in 2024-25, a grinning McCollum responded, “I’m not going to volunteer (to be a reserve), but if that’s what the coach wants to do, that’s what he wants to do. The biggest thing for us is to play the game at a high level. I don’t get paid to coach. I get paid to go out and do what I’m told. That’s the mindset coming into this season. I’ve been a quality player for a long time and will continue to be that.”
For everyone saying he wouldn’t come off the bench, told y’all he would be fine with it as long as it leads to wins….

That doesn't read "fine" to me. That reads "we better win a lot this way or I'll be pissed"

A PC answer. Sounds like a guy who knows he isn't going to be asked to come off the bench.

Well nobody is going to volunteer to be taken out of the starting lineup.
There were a bunch of people on here all offseason saying that CJ absolutely would not come off the bench and would be pissed about it, and I’ve said all offseason he would be fine coming off the bench as long as the team is winning.
Yes of course everyone on the bench will be pissed if the team is losing

I don't think you know what this means.
Let's put our best 3pt motion shooter on the bench to keep our unhappy guy happy in Ingram. Zion'll figure it out lol

Fine doesn’t equal happy, just that if that’s what the coaches want then whatever.
I know he won’t be happy about it, no player is happy about moving to a bench role.

If we were to bench Ingram I would prefer Trey starting in his spot over CJ anyway.

Of course he wants to start. It's not like he's gonna play two minutes a game. He's going to be a vital piece.
There's a difference between being OK or fine with something for the betterment of the team,... and being pissed off like a selfish child because you don't agree with the coaches decision. He's a professional and a team player And established. If he doesn't start, It's for a reason

I think he is smart enough to realize he isn't Portland cj and is the older vet. I'd they need him to come off the bench he is coming off the bench. He would still play the same amount of mins.
I think he would rather come off the bench over starting and being taken out after 4 mins and sitting long periods.

We always tout CJ as the adult in the room. Let's see how things play out and hope he stays true to character if it even comes to that crux. We're watching Cam Jordan take a much diminished role in the Saints due to his career timeline and he's been nothing but professional about it. This is a non-story until CJ proves it wrong.

He probably had his best year as a pro last year. He's not playing like a vet who's wearing down. If anythign he seems to be getting better with age.
There are 6 guys on this team that are NBA starters. 2 of them won't start, and they won't be happy about it, regardless of what they say publicly.
I think they all realize though that they will all be playing 30mpg, so it's not like their numbers will be hurt by not starting, it's just the fact that starting means something to most guys.

lol
I saw his comment first before seeing this thread and am totally perplexed by your framing of it.
He is definitely not "fine" with it

Glad there's a few people with common sense on here.
CJ starts or CJ is traded.
If CJ is put in a limited enough role on the bench then he isn't in a role worth 30mil.

He's "the adult in the room", "our leader", "our best shooter", "our 2nd highest paid player".
Lets bench him and pay him 20% of the cap!

CJ is a 33 y/o 6’3” SG who is the most likely contract to be moved next offseason to avoid taxes.
He may not like it, but he’ll accept becoming a 6th man like the pro that he is. It’s just a fit issue. We need to stagger him and Dejounte so that neither of them has to guard up in size.
Dejounte/BI should be the first subs out for CJ/Theis. CJ’s plus scoring/spacing and negative rebounding/defense makes more sense as a 6th man.

Ohhh we need to stagger the (2) players that compliment each other? Separate CJ's offense and Murray's defense/ facilitating?
Genius.
So glad we got a true PG to not pair with the true SG.

With tiny Jose and Hawk? Yeah his lack of rebounding and defense will really help that 2nd group... Makes so much sense

Go look at stats for CJ and Dejounte guarding players 6’4”+. Dejounte has not been a very good defender since his San Antonio days and CJ is CJ. If you look past surface level observations of their games, they don’t complement each other nearly as well as you think because neither is very good at covering shooting guards and both have issues with POA defense.
Maybe you forgot that the Hawks traded Dejounte because he doesn’t play well next to a small offensive guard who forces him to guard up?

Well considering CJ is a 6’3” combo guard, we don’t have that problem. The problem we do have is a roster imbalance with too many smaller guards and not enough competent bigs.

This is all so wrong. Trae is a PG and Murray is a PG. That's why it didn't work.... Trae was so bad at defense it even made Murray's production worse.
You used his play with the Hawks as his talent metric and then acknowledged his fit with Trae like he was the problem....
If you are trying to look at his production on the Hawks as his fit here compared to when he was full time PG on the Spurs then this conversation is pointless. You are already fighting a pointless battle/ mindset.

McCollum is a pro and going to say the right things. He's still a borderline top 15 SG and would start for almost half the teams in the league. So him coming off the bench for us, a bubble team, while we have a journeyman in the starting lineup is just dumb. I love Jones and Murphy, but they aren't better offensive players or near the leader that McCollum is. This is a mistake, if it happens..

Agreed. And when CJ is no longer that guy then he is traded.
The people that want to keep a 30mil CJ contract coming off the bench are the same people that get uspet that we didn't trade BI and get the most for him. Make that make any damn sense....
Our fans change their overall opinions based on their personal player preferences. What a fricking surprise.
