I'll be in NYC next week and want to go to some of the lesser known museums or the ones off the beaten path. I've done all the big ones: Guggenheim, Met, MoMA. Recs?

I wouldn't call it lesser known but if you haven't done The Whitney that's the obvious answer.

Not exactly a museum but the boat tour around the island by the American Institute of Architects is like going to a museum. Fantastic.

Small restored wooden boat.

Both sound fun. I guess it depends on what kind of mood you are in that day.

The Frick Museum is closed?
I have been there. That was the small, lesser known museum I was going to recommend.

New Museum -modern art
Intrepid Museum - military aviation
The Cloisters - part of the Met medieval art
Brooklyn Museum
Cooper Hewitt - design
National Museum of the American Indian - part of Smithsonian
Noguchi Museum - Long Island design and sculpture
Paley Center for Media - TV & Radio museum

You can also target just a few adjacent halls at the Met ignoring the big temporary exhibits. Go when the weather outside is fine. Bad-weather days usually have the worst crowds. I like Medieval and the adjacent Arms & Armor.

Neue Gallery. Up near the Met (practically across the street). Small museum but has Gustav Klimt’s the lady in gold. Read the book about it if interested.

- Tenement Museum
- The Whitney, as mentioned. Really impressive skyline views to boot

I've done this one and it is fantastic. They have a great afternoon tea as well. Loved the Tenement museum and tours as well.

Chelsea Dia
The Dia also maintains 2 works in the area by Walter De Maria , Broken Kilometer and New York Earth Room. The Earth Room is an actual apartment that has been filled with dirt since the 1970's, pretty funky. De Maria was the drummer in a band with Lou Reed before Lou started Velvet Underground.

Museum of Sex?

The Intrepid Museum (on an aircraft carrier) maybe if you’re an aviation nerd — believe the Concord is back as well. Been meaning to go myself for the longest time.
