Incredibly kind man
Had the pleasure of sharing a conversation with him one time.
May he rest in Peace

“Who wants to sex Mutombo?”
Supposedly that was his pickup line while at Georgetown. Heard that in some sports show many years ago.

An old favorite of mine growing up. I wore the shite out of his Nuggets jersey in junior high.

Remember watching his Nuggets upset the Sonics in Game 5 as a kid. I was furious. I wanted another Sonics/Bulls Finals. He had 30 blocks in a 5 game series that year and that set an NBA record. They lost a barn burner of a 7 game series to the Jazz the next round. The Rockets went on to win the title.
RIP Mount Mutombo

Friend,
This news makes me very sad. I met Mr. Mutombo in 1993 when New Orleans hosted the NCAA Final Four. One the promotions during the fan festivities was a basketball tournament named Planet Hoops. This 3 on 3 tournament took place on the streets of the Warehouse District. I was on an amazing team of fellow Dragons in the 9-10 year division. We won our first three games in convincing fashion and attracted the gaze of the NBA star.
Turns out that he selected two or three teams from each age division and he chose us. As part of the selection, we got to wear Mutombo jerseys and quite stylish Adidas basketball sneakers with a Mutombo emblem on the tongue that I forever wrongly assumed was part of the national flag of Congo.
He told me, “You are a very good rebounder.” This was before I broke my ankle on the way to Central Grocery, which destroyed my volleyball career. We did not end up winning the tournament, but I kept those shoes and jersey until Mother threw them out during a big house cleaning around 2000. It still irks me she did that.
