Had to cancel NC trip due to flood damage need new ideas

Just canceled my cabin on the outskirts of Asheville for the week of thanksgiving. Need new ideas. Looking for hiking and decent scenery. Will have three teenagers as well. Arkansa looking attractive just not sure what area as I haven’t been. We have been to the smokies several times so looking elsewhere this ground.

Blue Ridge, GA...we went this summer & fell in love with the area. Going back at Thanksgiving.

Mentone, Alabama is a cool spot. Can drive ~an hour to cloudland state park in Georgia

Hot Springs area would be really neat, been wanting to get out there myself. Benton if you like mountain biking has been on my list once I get my back better.
Desoto is right there too.

We had to cancel our Christmas trip to to NC also so we are now looking for alternatives.
I was thinking about possibly Kentucky to hit up at least 1 distillery on the bourbon trail. Any insights to things to do there around Christmas time for families? Any ski spots by any chance?

Blue Ridge, GA is a great area. We have been 3 times in the last 2 years and really enjoyed it. Just know that shops close around 5-6pm in these small mountain towns.

Driving or flying? If flying- I suggest CA: Big Sur/Carmel/Monterrey/possibly Santa Cruz depending on length of trip. Beautiful area with some good hikes, good restaurants, shopping for the ladies in Carmel, awesome aquarium in Monterrey Bay.

Some trees down, but nothing significant. It bowed around this area to the east and got spared.
It's a weird position these towns that got spared are in, we are going to need housing for all those displaced, but these towns also need the revenue from tourism to keep going. One of my friends that's a photographer on the dragon was trying to get people to keep coming to the area/not cancel their trips and showing how things aren't shutdown near there and encouraging tourism while not far away to the east things got wiped out.

We're still on a "wait and see" mode for our Christmas trip to Asheville. We have a BnB on the South Slope which is well above the flooding. We'll make our final call in early November.

Buffalo River National Park is nice if you head for AR. It's in the north. The Ouachita Mountains in the south is where Hot Springs is.
I've been to both as well as several places in W NC. I prefer the Appalachian's and the overall vibe of that region, but the older/smaller mountains/hills of AR have their attraction.
We rented a cabin near Harrison many years ago for Thanksgiving. Only restaurant serving that day was a Dennys...turkey loaf! It was a dry county, and we had to drive up to MO for a bottle of wine.

I'd be shocked if anything is close to ready by that point. My cousin just evacuated a few days ago and said he was told many areas likely won't even have water for at least a few more weeks. Most of downtown Asheville was flooded. You can't recover from something like that in less than 2 months.
There's still only a handful of ways in and out of town because so many roads/bridges have been washed out. East of there in the Black Mountain/Swananoa area, it's even worse. It's likely going to be years before those areas are back to what they were.
I'd go ahead and make alternative plans now. And frankly, they probably want people to stay away so the scarce resources they'll have can be used for the start of a rebuild.

Yeah I would see if you could get out of that being in the Asheville area and just a few months. Too much destroyed there.
