Looks like Pitts. Whomever posted the differences between the poisonous and non-poisonous in Louisiana chart help me out with my decision. But if it's in the woods I'm shooting it especially if it looks angry at me.

I'm going moccasin.
Looks like a pit between eyes and nose, no watersnake vertical stripes on head, and resting with his head canted up
Eta: little disappointed it's not a brown water snake. I feel like a streak has been broken

I bet that snake stinks. Moccasin musk.

That's not a very defining picture. Can't see end of tail, can't see mouth, can't see head, can't see how fat and stubby it is, can't smell it.
Looks like a mouth to me but I'm not 100% convinced from that picture.

That head should tell you all you need to know.
That snake dies 100% of the time if I run across it.

Funny, I had a water snake on my driveway this morning that had me looking at it several minutes before confirming it was just that. He flattened out his body and his head even got fatter. It was very docile and had a pretty pink mouth with some round eyes. Also had the vertical stripes under the mouth.

There is no question that that’s a cottonmouth. Shouldn’t even be a thought.

So exaggerated.
In the past 4 years I’ve encountered well over 300 cottonmouths and caught over 100. I can count on my fingers (probably on one hand) how many times I’ve smelled musk.

Anyone should know that is a moccasin at just a glance.

Both are clearly visible in the pic

You may want to move your next eye exam up.
Water moccasin, absolutely no doubt about it.

You can 100% tell if you take that trap and immerse fully in a bucket of water. Put a brick on top and come back in 24 hrs. Remove snake and it will be still enough to look for fangs

The brown band across his face tells you it's 100% moccasin.

You're going to get a lot of people confusing it for a Water Moccasin but that is 100% a Western Hognosed Apple Snake. They are harmless and, quite frankly, don't deserve to be caged like that.

Yup. Also referred to as a “bandit mask”.
