Live Oak, FL, east side of the eye wall, 67 mph winds, 97 gusts.
No way in hell it had winds of 140 mph. fricking media and National Hurricane Center are lying again.

In a special update from the National Hurricane Center, Helene made landfall just east of the mouth of the Aucilla River. This is about 10 miles west-southwest of Perry, Florida. Based on data from Air Force reconnaissance aircraft, the maximum sustained winds are estimated to be 140 mph.
quote:I was commenting to MsNC last night that even as the Weather Channel was breathlessly reporting Helene's intensification to 140mph, the eye wall seemed to be disorganized. By doppler, the thing had the look of a Cat 1-2, not a Cat 4.
An ASOS station at the Perry-Foley Airport recently reported a sustained wind of 55 mph and a wind gust of 99 mph while also reporting a minimum pressure of 948 mb.
Re: Perry's 55mph report, and to add fuel to the fire, apparently the US National Weather Service standard for reporting wind speed is the speed must be maintained for just 1 minute. The European standard is 10 minutes.

Catturd Twitter even mentioned that the reporting was off

97 eh, 140 meh…
MSM: we were close, in the ballpark, simply need to adjust slightly, a misunderstanding
Reality: missed it by 40%+

ATL was supposed to be hammered with 10-12 inches of rain and 70mph winds. As of 6:20am this morning, we’ve had a light drizzle and zero wind all night.
What a joke.
What a joke.

We're suppose to be greatful that the storm wasn't as bad as they grossly overstated. Not pissed because a bunch of overpaid fedgov "scientists" fuked up a forecast worse than thier climate change predictions.
They are so desperate to prove thier claimed climate bullshite that they are falsely hyping up these storms. This crying wolf business is going to get a lot of people killed when a storm actually is severe.
But hey, let's give em another 6 billion to frick around.

You guys are comparing measurements taken at vastly different altitudes.

Pretty much all media is now just fake news even the weather channel and the NHC.
They want to hype up every storm and it’s going to end up getting a assload of people killed one day.

Maximum Sustained winds are a single point in a storm, not the average. Secondly winds winds will decrease in speed when it gets overland, both because it weakens and wind doesn't move as fast on land compared to the ocean.
from Wikipedia.
is the Perry-Foley airport wind gage 10M above the ground? If not there would be a higher speed 10M up that at ground level.
Do most weather forecasters blow things out of proportion? Yes
Does the NHC over estimate winds by 50+ MPH? Doubtful.
from Wikipedia.
quote:
The maximum sustained wind normally occurs at a distance from the center known as the radius of maximum wind, within a mature tropical cyclone's eyewall, before winds decrease at farther distances away from a tropical cyclone's center.[2] Most weather agencies use the definition for sustained winds recommended by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), which specifies measuring winds at a height of 10 metres (33 ft) for 10 minutes, and then taking the average. However, the United States National Weather Service defines sustained winds within tropical cyclones by averaging winds over a period of one minute, measured at the same 10 metres (33 ft) height.[3] This is an important distinction, as the value of the highest one-minute sustained wind is about 14% greater than a ten-minute sustained wind over the same period

Correct. Both wind speed readings are correct. They're just taken at different times and vastly different altitudes.
