Seems like more babies being born with serious health problems than the old days.

I don’t know the actual numbers (and I don’t trust government reports) but it seems like we’re having a higher occurrence of babies being born with serious, verified illnesses or defects. Maybe just anecdotal, but there’s been A LOT I know of in my local and social media circle. When my kids were born 20-25 years ago, we knew it was a possibility, but it seemed pretty rare. Nowadays it seems like an crapshoot. Anyone else notice that?

Seems like the opposite to me.

It seems like a significant portion of my generation (millenials) are having children born with autism

Social media is notorious for shoving things that garner engagement into your face. Makes is seem like every other child born is magnificently disabled. It's simply not true

I would have said the opposite honestly, at least amongst the younger couples that I know.

They are just able to diagnose at a younger age now…plus, there are a lot more known conditions. Word also travels a whole lot faster because of social media.

Maternal age over 30, and especially over 35, is a significant risk factor for ASD, along with many other birth/genetic defects.
People are waiting too long to have children these days.

25 years ago, we didn’t have social media. Also, you probably weren’t paying much attention to babies being born 25 years ago if you’re currently at the age where your circle is having kids.

Number of issues at play here…
1-5. Social media. You hear about everything from everyone you know. You also hear about it from people you don’t know, but the brain has a hard time seperating it.
6. As anothe poster mentioned, medical technology has advanced and allowed us to diagnose the problems before the baby is born, as opposed to after the newborn baby gets sick.

Pain med addiction that eventually caused the heroin addiction started in the mid to late 90s. Lots of addicts had kids. Im sure that plays a factor.

I’ve wondered about this for a long time. I grew up in the 70s and 80s. Autism basically didn’t exist. I don’t think I even heard the word “autism” until the early 90s. Now it’s rampant.
What happened?!?

The internet didn’t exist 50 years ago, sir.

It’s a fairly recent thing we’ve started to actually understand what it is and test on a large scale
We’ve broadened the criteria for what is considered in the spectrum
Women are giving birth much later in life

I’d entertain an argument that the schedule is far too aggressive.

Seems so. Definitely more autism.
