The state and the country may have been much different had he lived.

Boy, how the rich hated that man

Every man a king isn’t too far from today’s definition of socialism. That’s why he was killed.

The Ken Burns Huey P Long doc is fantastic. Made in the 80s so the interviews are with people who knew him and were active in politics and the media in the 20s and 30s.

In spite of his dictatorship he did much good for the state and put LSU on the map.

He’s up there with Teddy Roosevelt on the list of the most fascinating 20th century American politicians.
The Great Depression brought out some incredible orators. They were all batshit though. Huey, Hitler, Mussolini. Those motherfrickers in the 1930s could make some speeches.
"Huey Long: Share the Wealth"
Difference in Democrat and Republican Leadership
Every Man a King
I wish campaigns still put out campaign theme songs

Everything wrong with LA politics is a result of Huey. Also, that our state government is so over bloated much of it with ne'er do well relatives of elected officials.

Where do y'all stand on the theory that he was hit by his own guys on accident / ricochet?

This.
And the fact that so many people look up to that slime ball and Edwin Edwards explains why the state will always be last in every important issue. And why I am glad I left and won’t go back.

Inaccurate. Nobody had a Tommy Gun. His bodyguards carried 357s loaded with 38 special rounds. The bullet removed from Long disappeared so whether Weiss or a bodyguard fired the fatal shot will never be known.
Long brought this state into the twentieth century. Yes, he enriched himself and his cronies and some of his methods were autocratic. But they were no different than what the New Orleans Old Regulars and their upstate planter allies had been doing for decades while they controlled the state. Long at least made it so the common man got a few crumbs: schools for his children, hospitals when he was sick, roads and bridges to take his crops to market.
Fun fact: the animosity the rest of Louisiana has for New Orleans stems from the 100+ year political and economic stranglehold it once had. Long broke that stranglehold.

I can see some similarities in Long and Trump.

the payoff for supporting the dem.s at the time was a dump truck load of clam shells for your personnel driveway. Made a good road bed but difficult to walk on bare foot
