Space Wars: 80s CRAY-2 Supercomputer vs. Modern-Day iPhone

The CRAY-2 was a behemoth even in its day (1985), at 5,500 pounds and taking up 16 square feet. The iPhone 12, on the other hand, weighs 5.78 ounces and occupies just 1.6 square inches. While the CRAY-2 was busy doing nuclear research and working on oceanographic development for the Department of Defense and the Department of Energy, the iPhone is probably most used for texting and scrolling through social media.
But like the smartest kid you went to school with who spent all their time gaming, it has the potential to do so much more. The CRAY-2 operated at 1.9 billion FLOPS (floating-point operations per second)—while the iPhone 12 operates at 11 trillion FLOPS.
Well, my first big computer was analog.

That's about the size of a pallet

Has a footprint about 10x that size actually.
What is wrong with journalists?

My uncle used one of these for exactly this purpose and would take us to his office to see it whenever we visited.

That would be more like an Apple watch size.

That 11 trillion FLOPS seems way off since it's not running an NVidia card with massive cudas. The phone processor running at 3 ghz should optimally give 3 billion FLOPS and the iPhone has 4 processors.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but that should be 12 billion FLOPS. Still the progress is amazing.

Yeah, but an iPhone was never cool like WOPR

Ordering the 3 Crays and gene sequencers is what gave John Hammond away to Biosyn

Might be talking about just the main computer parts in the phone.

Saw a really Cray-2 back in the 1990s at Disney World at innovations. It was very impressive.

My TRS-80 would smoke all those fools.

I was impressed that my Atari 800 could execute 1200 cycles in the vertical interval of a video.

I worked for Marathon in the early 90's and we had a Cray on site that handled seismic data.

Sat on one of these in Houston in 1984... cool af. I believe it was at Shell.

The CRAY was a piece of modern furniture. A sofa, really.

Though I love that I get to write about the tech industry every day, it’s touched by gender, racial, and socioeconomic inequality and I try to bring these topics to light.
Why are all "journalists" progressive liberals?

Could've been referring to volume. 1.6 in3 could be about right

The iPhone 14 can do 2.0 TFLOPS on paper. The author of this article has confused FLOPS with Apple's internal benchmarking for it's "neural" operations per second.
