Oversold Flights

Happy labor day weekend travel
. For those of you flying this weekend, you have a decent chance of having some oversold flights given the absolute mess with storms moving across the country yesterday.
Current flight this morning to Minneapolis is showing 9 seats available with 19 on the list. During checkin on the kiosk, there is a notification that 'Volunteers may be needed for this flight. Are you willing to volunteer? Put your price on the next screen'. The max for Delta is $800 so I put that, let's see if they actually need anyone. Same notification popped up for the flight to ND. While the list may include some standby passengers, the basic economy tickets are also included on it. I have a feeling this flight may be over by quite a few people. Will keep the board updated
Has anyone else had any recent bumps for decent $$?

Nothing recent.....had a work trip in 2019 on United out of BR and they needed seats. Told them I'd do it for $1k. They scoffed, no one else volunteered, manager approved the $1k.
Got to my destination 3 hours later than planned (meeting was the next day) and I booked a flight to Tokyo with the $1k a few days later.

They needed 3 for Minneapolis, 4 for JFK, and 4 for LGA this morning out of Orlando. But given thunderstorms predicted at 2-4pm and the next flight to MSP being 430pm, I'm on the plane

back in the early 2000s we did this on every trip we took. basically our next trips flights were on the house. probably took 10 or so trips like this.
unfortunately we have not had that opportunity in years. sucks.

I was flying solo in June out of Portland, ME at 6 pm. I got offered $1000 and countered with $1500, which they eventually took because no one else wanted to give up their seats. American put me in a hotel for the night and made it home before 10 am the next day. We used that $1500 for flights to Whistler next March

How often does this still happen? I fly almost every month and I can't remember the last time they asked for volunteers for this
I would probably do it every time when I'm coming home from a work trip if offered

Both flights today ended up being oversold for me by 3. Orlando is having thunderstorm issues as expected, flight to Fargo from Minneapolis is also over and needed a few volunteers. So it does still happen around holidays, after storms wreak havoc, concerts in small cities, etc.

The max is not $800; maybe on the kiosk screen but not what a gate agent can offer. I've seen plenty of posts on r/delta where people have gotten thousands to give up their seats.
Also, from what I've read if it takes raising the amount to get enough people; all who volunteered will get the higher amount. So it can be advantageous not to volunteer early at the kiosk but you run the risk of enough people volunteering ahead of you.
Here's an article where Delta was giving $10k/seat:

You're right, sorry if I caused any confusion. I haven't been on any flights going over $800, it's the rare exception I feel like for them to go over $1000 unless they're desperate

You can get up to 3x your ticket price in compensation. If you paid $500, you can get $1500. Happened to a buddy of mine on the way back home. Him and a few others were on an oversold flight. They all got $1500 vouchers and got bumped to a flight only a few hours later.

Can confirm that O’Hare is a cluster today.
Our plane has been trying to reach our gate for about 2hr now.

quote:that completely depends on what airport you are in and where you are going. If there’s another flight to the same destination three hours later then there’s really not a problem is there? But if the next flight to where i am going is one or two days later, they are going to have to physically prevent me from boarding

Check your contract on your ticket. Airline doesn't have to reimburse you anything other than another flight. They can kick you onto the next flight if no one volunteers.

AA was offering $400 to swap from my CLT to LAS at 8:00 on 8/30 to 3:21 on 8/31. Ready to get to Vegas so refused.
Bad weather last night and everything out of CLT was cancelled. Ended up on the 3:21 today anyway.

i was on a flight on the Sunday after the CrowdStrike issue where United needed 8 volunteers. A few people took the $600-1k offer, but the last four spots went for $4k/person. Obviously not normal circumstances since they had to get pilots on the plane as passengers who were stuck in ORD. I overheard from one of the pilots that they had approval to go up to $5k/person.

Several years ago I was waiting at the gate for an American flight. The gate agents started asking for seats. Nobody accepted the offers. Just before boarding they announced that the last passengers to check in would be rebooked onto a later flight. This is why I check in now as early as possible.

Yesterday from SHV to Vegas they were offering free flight voucher, I don’t know the conditions. If I was by myself or with wife would do it but we had our kids.

Dumb this down for me… how does this work?
If oversold, they offer extra money to get on a later flight?
Also- if a plane has 100 seats, why would they sell 105 tickets??
I don’t fly a lot, but would take advantage is possible when I do

I had the same question so I asked a gate agent one time when this happened. Airlines keeps track of which flights typically have no-shows or delays which result in empty seats. If typically there are on average five no-shows or delayed passengers on a flight of 100 seats, they will sell 105 tickets.
