I was 4 years old in 1979 for USC @ LSU in Tiger Stadium ...

All I hear is how magical the game was. Obviously I do not remember the game but looking at old grainy footage of the game on YouTube it is hard to tell if the call against Benji Thibodeaux for face mask against USC was phantom or legit. I heard for years it was a phantom call but looks like the atmosphere was insane and the game was call pretty evenly by officials.

I was 11....it was crazy!
My dad said that was the craziest atmosphere ever.
We should have won!

It was my first game as a student. We stomped on the metal bleachers with our feet every time USC had the ball. I’ve never heard the stadium louder.
I wonder if anyone has ever asked Benjy Thibodeaux about the face mask? I would love to hear what he says. I’m sure someone on here knows him.

I was a 5th year Sophomore in 1979 and was at the game. That game was where Tiger Stadium lived up to and set the standard for loudness and atmosphere for my generation...... the only thing disappointing about that game was the final score...... I'm an old man now but I still get chills about that game.
From where I could see from the student section, it was not a face mask.

I was at that game, it's been a while but that was a very questionable call that even surprised McDonald, there was another "no call" on the USC o-line on their winning drive, a play which appeared to might have killed their drive, either 3rd or 4th and a few and their entire line moved after being set and before the ball was snapped, and the refs were like "nothing to see here, do over!"
ETA: no call may have been on the same play, it's been 45 years

even more ridiculous is in 1978 USC beat Bama head to head yet shared the national title

I had just graduated and missed it but on radio could hardly hear J Fergeson call the entire game. I believe Benjy said he did graze the mask just rotten luck but the youtube replays clearly show SC linemen slight move before the snap? Was totally monumental night just could not hold back that team of future NFL HOF and stars although we did kick a in 84 in LA so some payback.
Lets finish it off Sunday!!

There IS a video of the game somewhere in the ESPN vault. ESPN broadcast it on a tape delay basis and by that I mean a few days later.

I was a boy scout working the game.

truly one the most magical games ever played in Tiger Stadium.

yes but unfortunately it was broadcast in a completely closed in booth that didn't begin to capture the noise level

I was 24 at the time and this loss was the best game I've ever seen in Tiger Stadium. Best ... but not the only great game that I've seen since then.
The thing I remember about the campus that day was that the dorms in the stadium were still in use. Many of the students that lived there had hung very large fake condoms out of the dorm windows. Great pic. And Led Zeppelin was blasting from the windows.

Wow! I was 31! What a game... the infamous face mask penalty on Bengi Thibodeaux to give USC an extra opportunity! I remember the boos!!!

The game was not on live TV. Tickets were impossible to get. USC fans unlike our regular SEC foes didn’t travel so the stadium was packed with LSU fans.
At the time LSU embraced the underdog roll. We always felt we were underdogs, but we wanted it more. When we played northern teams it was like the civil war part 2.
The game was pure bedlam. The fans never stopped exhorting the team especially our defense. Defense Defense Defense was shouted by all for four quarters in a pulsating rhythm as if there were the sounds ftom war drums.
Big Red, Chico Moore and many others would lead the crowd in their various sections. The roar was constant as the sounds from each section would overlap.
There has never been anything like it. No tv timeouts, no introductions, and no interruptions. It was Football, Football, Football.
At the end of the game, we were screwed. USC moved before the snap and then we got the bogus face mask call, we never grabbed the face mask. But even then we didn’t quit. We sent our fastest WR in( was he named Turner?) and Ensminger threw it as far as he could into the South end zone, but alas the ball dropped to the turf.
The crowd was stunned, but refused to leave. We saluted our guys for giving us the game of our lives. No one left for ten minutes.

I went to the 1984 game in Los Angeles. The outcome was never in doubt and the crowd was less than enthusiastic. The weather was beautiful, though.

It was incredible. I was a freshman in high school and this was this was the first game I attended in Tiger Stadium.

Was there with my grandson! It was his freshman year at LSU and he surprised me with tickets! Place was electric!

I was about the same age. I'll never forget that magical day. My dad was in grad school at the time and he and I went and spent all day on campus.
