Looking to buy a used midsize 4x4 truck. Will not be a daily driver. Leaning to a Tacoma, but would consider GMC Canyon or Chevy Colorado. What does the OB suggest?

probably go with the tacoma.
it's gonna go like this. your gonna find a 2022. it probably sold at msrp of like $45,000. It's gonna have like 32k miles on it. They are going to ask 50k for the truck and you'll probably need to offer like 55k to close the deal. Goodl luck.

Toyota all the way out of those choices

I know everyone will laugh but my Honda Ridgeline AWD will go through mud better than my buddies taco. The AWD system is pretty badass. I pull a tracker pro 170 with it. When I pull it out my lake it never spins a tire. My Silverado 2500 got stuck one time pulling it out.

I went and looked at a Ridgeline today, decided I’m going to get one.
I bought a 2010 Tacoma 4x4 in 2012 with 56,000 miles never had the first problem with it except a U-joint went bad.I’m going to pass it to a grandson, was going to get. a new Tacoma.
The new 4 cylinder with turbochargers turned me off.
Ridgeline drives very nice, only has 5,000 towing capacity but that’s all I need.

I went from a 2021 Silverado 2500 to a Ridgeline. Didn’t need the big arse truck anymore. I am more of comfort now. It does everything I need and gets 25-26 MPG doing 75 mph on interstate. Pulls my bass boat fine. I actually get 17 MPG pulling the 17 ft tracker.

If you don't need the towing capacity of a 1/2 ton then the Ridgeline is a fine choice. I wish Honda would have made a true 1/2 ton V8 but they didn't.

1st Generation Tundra (2000-2006) is a midsize by today's standards. If the frame isn't rusted the 4.7 V8 will easily go 300-400K miles with oil changes and a few timing belts.

Love those trucks, wish they were still the same size.

Ridgeline
My only issue with the Ridgeline is they are ugly. It's an Accord El Camino. IMO, they should have designed it apart from their sedan line ups, but it literally looks like they chopped an Accord in half and added a small bed.
I like some of the features of the Ridgeline, and the size is perfect for a smaller truck.

I am a Toyota fan and think they are the best for the money.
Having said that. For the money you can find something more fuel efficient.
I assume fuel economy would be why you would want a midsize over a full size. I went from a Full Size chevy to a Taco when I converted over. They got the same fuel economy with 1/2 the truck. My first hunting trip to Illinois, I looked like the Clampet's running down the interstate. Not enough room to do everything I wanted to do, and no benefit to fuel efficiency. Sold it and went back to FS pickup

I'm a big Toyota guy.
My dad has a Nissan Frontier that was a fraction of typical Taco used and it's still going strong. Relatively no issues outside routine maintenance (which he neglects regularly).

This is actually convincing me to want a Ridgeline.

Tacoma is an outstanding truck but they're a bit cramped for me so I'm another vote for a 1st gen Tundra. I had one for 15 years and you simply cannot kill them.

One of the few positive things about getting older is caring less about what people think of what I drive.
I would drive the shite out of a Ridgeline. Seems like it would be an awesome road trip/camping rig. What 27mpg on the highway? Throw camping stuff in the the back and a roof rack for a kayak and head to Canada.

Indestructible but terrible for fuel efficiency.

“One of few positive things about getting older is caring less about what people think of what I drive.”
I’m a contrarian,I’ve never cared one iota what people thought. When I got out of Navy I bought a Pinto, drove it 5 years and than got a Corolla hatchback.
Most guys my age were driving Mustangs,Camaros or Firebirds and such.
I told my stepson I was getting a Ridgeline,he said people are going to make fun of you.
I told him I went into nursing school in ‘73 when men in nursing was rare.
I had people, accuse me of being gay, insinuate I was gay and ask me if I was gay.
I didn’t give a shite then,don’t give a shite now.
I didn’t tell him this, being a young single guy in nursing I got more poon than he ever dreamed of.

Thats commendable and a feather in your cap. When young I cared wayyyy to much about what others thought about my actions and it definitely caused me to make decisions based on that and not what was best for me. Even still I question myself if a decision I'm making is being subconsciously influenced by what people might think.
