Looking at maybe changing my deer plot seeds. I know last year with the drought affected mine. But maybe looking at going with something else. We normally do a mix but it seems that don’t eat the radishes.

Knowing what kind of soil you have, what kind of equipment you have, what size your plots are, where you're located, etc.

Those details help with recommendations.

Anyone planting ahead of the rain this week? We havent planted in years due to no open canopy. Finally got some plots cleared this year and are looking to plant. When/what do y’all recommend? We are in CenLa.

Rye ( not rye grass) wheat, oats

I’m in SW Ms. We usually plant around the 2nd week of Oct. Don’t let the
Rain and “cool “ weather fool you into planting now. It will be hot and dry again. I’ve done it before and had to replant.

I’ve made the mistake of planting ahead of rains around Labor Day. It will be enough rain to germinate seed and another dry spell between Labor Day and mid-October will burn the new growth.

Sprayed all of the fields this weekend.
Gonna let it set for 3 or 4 weeks then burn everything and disc.
Will till and drop seed mid October.

Stay away from rye grass, wheat and oats!

Go with your red and or white clovers, chicory, mustard and or turnip green, throw in some pea seeds like purple hulls or black eyes. hell even lentils.

Rye grass is the devil but wheat and oats are great, high protein, drought tolerant, very palatable deer forage. I like to top sow white clover (in bottoms) or crimson (on hills). Oats do need to be covered, or drilled etc.

The most important step in planting plots is a soil test. If you haven’t done that, do it now, then wait to plant until the end of Sep or early Oct.

This; I used to plant elaborate mixes but have moved to a simple mix of wheat/oats plus reseeding clover and daikon radishes.

MDWF - Cool Season Food Plots

FWIW, this could be a good year for food plots - I'm not seeing a lot of acorns on the trees (I assume due to the stress from the drought last year) and since we're in a normal rainfall cycle my plots might actually grow (unlike last year).

Seen you responded to me but yeah that’s roughly what I plant, either a mix bag from Gatlin or Bluffs. Sometimes I just mix my own.

Can you elaborate on your screen name?

The reason I ask is that I will be hunting with a T/C Contender for the first time this year... and looking forward to it!

the one plant of the many that I put out that the deer really seem to target is forage rape.

The deer hammer it more than any of the others I put out. (wheat, cereal rye, oats, clovers, turnip, iron peas, rape)

Is forage rape just canola?
