In the market for a new Toyota . Doing some looking online. I saw one for 31,800. I emailed the dealer and asked about the OTD #. In general some would give it, some want you to visit their dealership. This one did and it came back at 39,300 OTD. I look at the breakdown…manufacture add ons + distributor add ons(red flag here) + dealership add ons, shipping/handling + taxes. So with everything, it’s close to 25% over advertised price. Why not advertise the price without TTL? Clear bait and switch.

So I decided to shop for a slightly used one on cars guru. Contacted a few dealers. One dealer in Texas was reasonable and nice quoting 31,700 otd with itemized breakdown. Another one in Louisiana reached out offering a similar car for over 37k otd. This car was advertised for 32k but it showed 33k as “fair market price”. I told him about the Texas offer and he accused the other one of playing games. Then he implied that the car may have been in a prior accident(it’s not). I told him I’m going with the other one and dude tried to shame me for not buying local. Like he would turn down an out of state buyer at his asking price. Glad the process is almost over.

Kind of ironic that he would shame you for buying a Toyota out of state.

I don’t take anything that any car salesman tells me personally. I also have no loyalty to any salesman or dealership.

Exactly this the people that work at dealerships are usually muppets. Not all, but many are.

Don't discuss OTD price it is subject to too much interpretation. Ask for the total price excluding TT&L ie everything included but money going directly to the government as mandated taxes and fees. If they later try to then say their $425 document fee (in LA) is a governmental fee point out R.S. 6:969.18 ALLOWS them to charge up to $425 but it is not mandatory and none of the money goes to the government.

+ distributor add ons(red flag here)

Toyota uses the distributor model. Works for Toyota, just another extra middleman for the buyer. Gulf States Toyota is LA/TX/AR/MS/OK.

I’ve watched Tommy Mikala (Delivrd) on YouTube negotiate deals and you should never pay any of the add ons. You just need to call enough dealers to get the right one and play them against each other. Never go to the dealership to negotiate. Do it all over the phone.

That is. Similar to a dude crying about bait and switch from a commissioned salesman he has called on the phone a few times about a car he isn't willing to physically go look at.

Might pay him next time. I got 17% off msrp last time I bought a car but it’s a pain.

I talked about why I hate dealers a few months ago (I think back in March).

That was so aggrevating I basically said if the price is wrong then you're lying. I even wrote a check to "save" the vehicle and the next day when they upped their price I ripped the check up in their face. Then they called the next day and "honored" their price they originally had and paid lump sum. All of the add-ons were free or "free" since nothing is ever without cost.

Also I always plan to walk out due to the smallest thing. A few dealers reached out but a few acted like they were doing me a favor and never reached out. Although I go total a-hole and take a Pic of the price I settled on with a higher trim and send it to the ones who never reached back.

They will always sell me a car on my terms, not theirs.

I just dealt with a Chevy dealer that tried to add the ‘protection plan’ of $500 and locking nuts for $250.

I told them another dealership was taking 2k off msrp so they matched it but they refused to take off their add ons. They said it couldn’t be done. The protection plan is stickers of the vin placed on windows. Not even etched in.

I passed if course. I could only imagine trying to buy a vehicle during Covid when the lots were empty. They are full everywhere and they still trying to pull this shite.

OTD is literally what it says, the price you pay out the door. It includes anything and everything associated with the purchase of the vehicle. It's the only way I will purchase a vehicle. I have a number written down on a piece of paper, I allow the salesman to make his best offer first, then give him a look at my piece of paper. If he can't get to that number or at least very close, I tell him we don't need to wast each other's time any further. It's really simple.

These are a negative to me unless it was a Lambo or something. They are really just "leave you on the side of the road nuts"

That is all true if you agree on the definition BUT it is completely irrelevant to my point. Salespeople, sales managers, and even F&I guys often view that $425 doc fee in LA as a mandated fee, sales people are often schooled that way. By getting them to agree on a price exclusive of only TT&L you have leverage to make the $425 disappear later when it almost always shows up and rarely included when hemmed into a price not including TT&L. The last 2 cars I bought in LA they reluctantly agreed to reduce the price by $425 when it showed up later after trying to suggest it is mandatory. YMMV and likely won't work with the 2 internet sales managers I used it on.
