Any sport (even profession outside of sports if you want.)

Football:
Al Woods

Baseball:
DJ LeMahieu

No knock on either of these guys obviously, but you hear/see their names on ESPN or wherever and I’m always like, “..really?”

Who else you got?

DJ is not the surprise MLB player from that team. That honor belongs to Austin Nola. He was a decent hitting, defensive ace SS in college who played MiLB baseball for 8 years, switched to catcher and had a solid MLB run for about 5 years.

I'd also say that Josh Smith is more surprising than DJ. Not a knock on Smith but he was an oft injured player at LSU with average size, speed, power, etc.

Garrett Temple, I don't think anyone expected him to have a 14 year career.

Danielle Hunter wasn't that special at LSU and is likely having a hall of fame NFL career.

Austin Nola getting the call up as a catcher after years in the minors, now headed into his 6th season in the MLB.

Duop Reath. Undrafted, unheralded player. Now a solid NBA contributor and member of the Australian national team (2020 bronze medal).

quote:

Professional career
Serbian League (2018–2021)
After going undrafted in the 2018 NBA draft, Reath joined the Dallas Mavericks for the NBA Summer League.[9][10]

On 1 August 2018, Reath signed a three-year contract with the Serbian team FMP.[4][11] In July 2019, he joined the Brooklyn Nets for the 2019 NBA Summer League.[12]

On 1 August 2020, Reath signed a contract with the Serbian team Crvena zvezda for the 2020–21 season.[13][14]

Illawarra Hawks (2021–2022)
On 19 June 2021, Reath signed with the Illawarra Hawks of the National Basketball League for the 2021–22 season.[15]

Reath joined the Phoenix Suns in the 2022 NBA Summer League.[16]

Qingdao Eagles (2022–2023)
Reath signed with the Qingdao Eagles of the Chinese Basketball Association. Reath averaged 18.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, 1.2 steals and 2.0 blocks per game across 39 appearances.[17]

Al Riyadi Beirut (2023)
Reath joined Al Riyadi Beirut of Lebanon in April 2023. He made his team debut on 19 April 2023 in the West Asia Super League (WASL), and scored 24 points in Al Riyadi's win over rivals Beirut Club in the division semi-finals.[18] Reath helped Al Riyadi win the West Asia subdivision championship following a team-high 29 points in the decisive Game 2 of the finals against Shahrdari Gorgan.[19]

Portland Trail Blazers (2023–present)
On 30 June 2023, Reath joined the Portland Trail Blazers for the 2023 NBA Summer League[20] and following the 2023 FIBA World Cup, he signed a one-year deal with Portland on 2 October.[21] However, he was waived on 21 October, prior to the start of the season,[22] but three days later, he was re-signed to a two-way contract.[23] Reath made his NBA debut on 12 November against the Los Angeles Lakers, scoring 11 points with three 3-pointers.[24] He later made his first start in the NBA ten days later, putting up 8 points and 4 rebounds in his starting debut in a win over the Utah Jazz.[25] On 26 December 2023, he had a career-high 25 points and nine rebounds in a 130–113 win over the Sacramento Kings.[26]

On 16 February 2024, Reath signed a standard contract with the Trail Blazers.[27]

National team career
Reath was selected as a member of the Australian national team for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.[28] He re-joined the Boomers for the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup.[29]

In July 2024, Reath was named in the Boomers' final squad for the Paris Olympics.[30]

I thought Tyrus Thomas would have a better NBA career.

I thought Jamarcus would be decent, certainly didn’t think he would bust so hard in the NFL.

I would have lost money if you would have told me Will Harris would make an All-Star game in MLB as a pitcher.

Ya never know.

James Wright had a decent NFL career after not doing much in college.

True! LeMahieu was always a friggin stud. The fans hardly noticed because, as one of his teammates told me, he was the silent killer. Also, apparently a first class guy, according to that same teammate.

To be fair, that WR room was stacked.

James Wright had 0 catches as a senior and got drafted.

Mett only threw to Odell, Juice and Kadron Boone in 2013.

Andrew Whitworth went from a 2nd rounder playing spot duty at guard for Cincinnati to a All-Pro left tackle in a few years and he will likely be a NFL Hall of Famer.

Ryan Clark was pretty average in college and went on to a decade+ career. And then parlayed that into a race baiting tv analyst.

And Ryan Theriot. Very good college player that made a very good MLB career and 2 world series rings, but think of all the great LSU baseball players that didnt make it as long as he did.
