Do alcoholics get stuck telling the same story multiple time a day?

We have a relation who drinks more than he should. Currently a lost license because of a DUI has him somewhat grounded.
Today he had some good news, so called my husband to share it. And in the course of that call, he told a story of what happened sometime this week, and he repeated the story in excruciating detail a second time.
Fast Forward.
Late tonight the phone rings. It's him, awakened and probably dehydrated and sounding still drunk. My husband listens and listens and listens as relative tells that same story in the same detail four more times or more. My husband lost count.
After the phone call ends, we wondered if being an alcoholic affects short term memory ....especially this much in less than twelve hours.
We've dealt with dementia, but not that much with alcoholics.
I'm asking for suggestions as to what to watch for, He's rather alienated from his geographically close family. My husband is trying to do the right thing, but we aren't sure what that should be.

Well when drunks black out, they tell you shite and don’t remember it. It’s definitely a sign that your relative is an alcoholic. Probably pretty advanced too…to be able to function for long periods of time they don’t remember at all.

It clearly affects STM for this guy. First goal is to avoid enabling this behavior over and over. Tell him (once he’s sober) that you’ve heard this before (especially if on more than one occasion)
If he’s salvageable he’ll be embarrassed enough to make a change. If not, the next step for him might be meetings, etc.
Big clarification: make sure it’s not early onset dementia. It doesn’t sound like it, but it would be preferable not to punish him for something that’s not his fault.

Alcoholic Dementia.. or potentially some other brain fog can be caused by alcoholism or just random luck. It does undoubtedly play a role in mental clarity and can be related to liver disease as well.

How old is he? Calling your cousin to talk about nothing sounds like an old guy move.
Booze absolutely affects memory, but usually the repeated story comes after sobering up.
Also, that sounds annoying as hell. Why didn't your husband end the call after the second retell?

Lost their license
Repeats themselves
Exasperated and sounds slurring still at 8am
Well, we can’t slip anything by you can we?

If you’re hearing the same story more than once in a conversation the subject is inebriated.

Encourage them to consider going to rehab. Alcoholism is very sneaky.

My dad’s an alcoholic and his brain is absolutely fried. I don’t even know who he is anymore.
Encourage them to get help but they have to wanna change in order for it to work. Don’t force it.

Repeating the same story every time you talk to him: because of the drinking he probably doesn’t have that many interesting stories to tell.
Repeating the same story during the same call: he’s drunk or his brain is officially pickled.

Cut him off. He has to hit rock bottom whatever that is.
Most likely others have and y’all still entertain his late night texts and calls when he’s drunk and lonely at home.

I really don't see the point in being flat out rude when someone is asking for advice. Must be a miserable existence to always be so grumpy.
To the OP, alcohol will definitely mess with his memory. He's likely blacked out when tell your husband so doesn't remember. Just let him know that you've noticed he's told the story next time. If he seems open you could mention the drinking if yall are close. If not, he'll figure it out.

Dump the old drunk. Nothing but trouble and aggravation.
