Is this some kind of epidemic? Every time I try to get things done I get these responses like “well my boss didn’t tell me to do that” or “I sent them an email about this problem so I don’t get egg on my face” and the famous “I gotta cover my arse”.

How is it that so many people can take a paycheck and avoid effort all together for fear of failing? I see it as an incredible weakness in most men these days. They won’t even try to solve a problem.
What says the OT?

Upper management is so full of people who don’t know what they are doing, they will criticize and question even good decisions. So people just avoid as much as they can.

You’re trying to pay people the same wages that were acceptable a decade ago that are no longer valued now.

a man generally gets punished for doing a good job. if you haven't learned that, you must be young. people who suck generally wind up with easier jobs bc they can't/won't do the hard work.

that's not directly to your point but it all goes together.

People aren’t going to take responsibility for something their isn’t their responsibility if it doesn’t come with a pay raise. And they’d be stupid to do so.

This OP complaint all seems very vague.

I agree. Some of the best positions are the least stressful because they can’t handle big time situations when the time calls. I don’t avoid responsibility because it’s embarrassing to get called out

Personally I’d like to keep my job and paycheck. If my boss encourages what you say, I am ok with taking initiative. I’ve had a few who do not want you stepping out of your lane.

For the sake of discussion, try to look at it in financial terms. Would you risk money for no possible gain? Would you not accept a put option that protected your long position if it were free?

In IT you don't get this choice today. Take more responsibility for the same pay, if you don't we will outsource to India and have them frick it all up

The longer the dept of education has them, the more ignorant they become & can only follow orders & need more when task is complete

It’s shitty management. Higher ups micromanage every decision and don’t empower anyone to handle anything so nobody will make a move without getting approval room somebody.

As someone who works in a place where you will be thrown under the bus and fired for anything that goes wrong outside of upper managements direction, it’s more about the environment than the man. I’m not about to get fired for going out on my own and something getting fricked up.

True, but those same people complain about getting passed up and not getting a promotion. Those who go above and beyond generally do move up in a company.

Now if by some chance you go above and beyond successfully, and then still dont get anything out of it after a long period, then you have reason to complain.
I recently promoted a newer person over someone that had been there longer (1.5 vs 2.5 years) simply because the experienced guy was lazy, cut corners, show up 5 minutes late/leave 10min early on a consistent basis. I started to have to check his work/make sure he was working. I would rather promote(noticeable salary raise) and leave more responsibility to the guy who asks questions, wants to get better, and who has shown he is more responsible. The experienced guy who wasnt promoted came and asked me why I chose the newer guy and I plainly told him all the things above.
And of course I got the “I have a lot going on in my life.” Well he answered his own question on why the other guy got the position.
