"Above my pay grade"

If you use this phrase in a professional setting, you are a loser. It makes you sound like a lamb being led willingly to the slaughter.
And here's another wake-up call: if someone has a "Director" or even "Senior Manager" title, they probably have a significant ownership stake in the business. You may not realize it at your "pay grade" but all owners have a seat at the table. Legally, ethically, and per accounting standards, none of us have the absolute authority to "pull rank" on each other, whatever the org charge might say. So GTFO with your little cliche.

Boss makes a dollar, I make a dime. That’s why I poop on company time.

99% of the time this phrase is used when people agree with the persons complaint but have no power to change anything. It means "I agree but I can't do anything about it". It has nothing to do with being a follower.

What if you use it in the military where the expression originated and actually carries weight?

You need to stay in your own lane pal.

Your assumptions are wrong.
Your legal analysis is wrong.
Your legal analysis is wrong.

Tell me you work at a small business without telling me I guess? No one at the privately owned business I work for has an ownership stake except the family... not even the C level folks.

Get over it.

So what are you getting reprimanded for?

Not saying this is how I end up doing everyone else's job everywhere I work.
I was currently hired in one department, and now work for 3 departments and do extra projects for my boss. Whoops.

How does it feel to have a fake email job where you work inside with the women and don’t really do anything? Sad how you pink collar types think you’re so tough

It's a casual way to say you don't have the authority to make that decision.
Nothing wrong with it.
Nothing wrong with it.

Whenever I say that it usually just means I need to get our legal counsel involved before I make an uninformed decision.

That's kind of the misconception I am talking about. This shite that I got told was already "decided by people above all of our pay grades" is actually something I could nip in the bud with a phone call. Will I use that power? Probably not. I use it maybe once every year or two, when some bad idea is really going to impact me or my team negatively. However, the premise that some unyielding decision has been made by someone with dictatorial control over me is 100% false.
