I'm never letting my daughter do spring break or summer vacation in Cancun...

This story is horrible.

A terrifying photograph shows the moment two Oklahoma college students were potentially drugged at a swim-up bar in Cancun - with one of the young vacationers fearing she ingested fentanyl.
Zara Hull, her boyfriend, Jake Sinder, and her friend, Kaylie Pitze, were with a group of friends in Cancun for a dream vacation when their trip turned into a nightmare on August 2.
'We both got water and within two minutes, Jake had turned around and we both hit the bar, heads down at the same time,' Hull, 20, told CBS News.
Hull said she experienced convulsions before passing out and becoming 'basically paralyzed.'
Snider rushed her to the hospital and remained by her side as staff reportedly demanded thousands of dollars for treatment.
'They had increased the money they wanted. The baseline was $10,000 for them to even look at me,' Hull said.
'They were holding me captive. We're college students; we don't have the money they're asking for.'

Cancun is shite. Head south to Playa or Tulum

Sounds like a pretty tested scam partnership between the hotel and the hospital.

Awful, especially the damn hospital.

Who paid for them to go down there? Stupid all around. My sympathy is limited.

Several years ago some Cancun resorts were serving bad alcohol, essentially refilling bottles with homemade shite which caused this same condition. There’s a drink right there next to them (not water) so I have to wonder if that’s what happened.
Regardless, don’t ever go to a hospital in Mexico or all of Central America except maybe Panama. Don’t rent a car either for that matter. Extorting tourists is a sad fact of life for those frickers.

This story has all sorts of holes in it. And I guess Jake's first thought was to snap a quick pic, apparently before the seizures began.

Fentanyl in the water is way down the list of things I'd be worried about if my daughter was on spring break in Cancun

This is wise in general. After Natalie Holloway you'd think people would learn their lesson about letting their kids go off to binge drink and party with strangers.

For some reason, people think we live in a consequence free society.
That's not the way reality works. You take risks, sometimes you lose.

Before an international trip, I recommend buying medical evacuation insurance.
What a terrible situation.

It just seems stupid to go to Mexico.

I don’t frick with Mexico, period, at this point.
Jamaica or the DR are safer at least within the resorts. Mexico isn’t even safe there given all the stories of people getting a drink from the bar and having issues because the alcohol was adulterated in some fashion.

We went there on our Sr trip in 96. About 20 of us 17-18 year olds ran around Cancun unsupervised for a whole week. Had a hell of time. Sucks the world sucks so bad nowdays.

This happens all the time down there and is a well documented scam between the bartender, local police and the “hospital” with the local cartel likely taking a cut.
They also tag tourists carrying large amounts of cash to be robbed so never, ever flash money around even at the resort.
The problem isn’t Cancun. The problem is Mexico.

This.
My wife's Aunt was down around Tulum or south of there a couple of weeks ago. Wound up having to get an emergency appendectomy. Public hospital couldn't see her and had a couple day wait. They had to go to a fancy private practice that wanted $5k just to get in the door and then $15k up front for the surgery. Out the door was about $33k.

Just avoid Mexico. It ain’t worth it. Cartels run that country. Something happens to you you’re fricked.

Went to Cancun in February and had a great time. Why the frick would you drink water that’s not out of an unopened bottle.

quote:Maybe. But this is pretty standard in Mexico. They want the payment up front, especially from tourists. If they treat someone and then they just walk out they aren’t going to be able to track down the tourist and get paid.

It’s the same with auto accidents there. You pay the estimated damages right at the scene of the accident.
As others have said get the emergency medical insurance and don’t drive in Mexico. If you do drive make sure you get Mexican insurance.
