i feel like penning would be a bit better if he engaged the lineman a bit faster. he's creating too much separation with his back pedaling which showcases his greatest weakness.

I know tackles like to get that kick back but he's jumping back way further than any tackle I can recall seeing, and DEs are eating it up

He keeps backpedaling and then gets pushed back even further. I don’t see how he can be that bad with the extensive coaching he has gotten.

I feel like he has to move to guard and even then I am not sure he would be any good. His big pros coming out of college were aggression, athleticism, and power and he has none of that as an OT. He has the most unnatural looking kick slide I have ever seen and he has no idea how to anchor down. Maybe he could utilize those aspects of his game if he were in a box and had help to either side.

Just watch Fuaga on the other side. Everything looks natural and under control. Penning is about as bad of a tackle as I have ever seen.

4th play is a great example. he's a full 5 yards and momentum still moving backwards still at first point of contact with the defender.

Whatever this guy has learned...he has forgotten. He might as well engage them early cause waiting and backpedaling gets him beat.

Unless his issue is he is scared shitless of being on an island at T and making a mistake so he gets paralysis by analysis, then I don’t see moving to G doing any good. His issues are he’s not attacking at all. His first couple steps are fine, then he just keeps backing up and waits too long and he gets hit in his chest first. A few times I saw him open his arms to grab DL on the outside of the shoulders, like WTF is that?!?! Sitting back & getting hit first is what’s causing him to get bull rushed by an OLB that’s about 60# lighter than he is.

Good news is that he did get better with each possession. But he’s got to start better, because we cannot go into a game conceding the first couple of possessions with 0 points

I think this is his issue. He looks scared to death out there. If he was in tighter quarters and could rely on the fact that the DL can only go so far to either side before he gets help then maybe he could use the aggression he was known for.

But you are correct that if his issue is that he refuses to attack then he won't work out at any position.

At the pro level and his technique is so bad. Moving him to guard is the only possible solution.

yeah, I've seen more than enough at him at tackle. Hopefully he can be a decent guard in the future.

On these reps, I don't give him a single "win". He had two ties because of a quick pass but a lot of losses and a hold when he was a help defender

I watched Fuaga, and sometimes he would do the kickback like Penning (not quite as far IMO) but there were also some plays where he attacked and anchored instead, I'm assuming that is by design. I didn't see Penning do that once

When the conversation comes up about the worst starting tackles I've ever seen for the Saints, I would always end that conversation with Charles Brown. I never thought I would have to amend that. I do now.

Dude is standing almost upright and letting the DE's get under him almost every snap. That's basic high school OL techinque that he's f'ing up. It's bad.

On top of his struggles, Ruiz is hot garbage as well
The two combined make for a disastrous situation without much solution on the current roster
They better be hitting refresh on cut down day to find any help on the waiver wire and hope somebody's cuts are better then what you have on the roster

That is why he is vulnerable to the inside.

It’s why I think he’d make a better guard. Hes going back 5 yards before making contact and then overthinking what the defensive player will do.

At guard he’d be making contact right away. It’s the only hope for him based on that tape.
