Today I learned that Ants put off unique and very pungent smells, and that some people can smell them and many others cannot. Scientists aren't sure why and believe it is genetic.

I have never smelled ants. I didn't know they smelled, so I guess I can't? Albeit, I have never put my face near an ant pile.

Am I the only one that didn't know this? Can you smell ants?

Sure you can. Pick them up and put them close to your nose

Off topic but my wife can smell snakes. She can tell when a snake is near like she is half blood hound.

She says they smell kinda like cucumbers. She also says water moccasins have the strongest smell.

Per genetic test, my wife is at least part Neanderthal, so she's got that going for her.

Far bigger concern is when uncles try to smell you.

Please stop by HR's office for a random drug test when you get back from your lunch break.

Some of them smell exactly like Raid when you squish them. Weird.

I can smell them. They leave chemical trails as signals. Don't have to be any closer than standing over the mound bent over a bit to sprinkle Amdro pellets.

Try sticking a shovel in a mound and flipping it over, noticeable smell.

I have heard people say this is what copperheads smell like.

I haven't ever smelled ants.

Just to add:
I can also smell wild hogs if the wind is right.

Exactly, I can smell the bitterness when I smash them. Not otherwise, though.

No, but I do know that pouring instant grits over a fire ant bed is an easy and effective to kill all of the motherfrickers.
