Thanks in advance. She is lost trying to find a hotel....

Use a major brand hotel, and do *not* book through a third party travel agency (Pr1celine, Exp3dia, etc.) The reason is that when she tries to check in, if she books with a third party (OTA,) the hotel whose lobby she is standing in crying can't actually do jack shite for her.
NYC is like New Orleans to an extent. One block you may be fine, the next block you're f'ed. But Bronx bad.

What?
To the OP, anywhere in Manhattan is fine. I have no experience with staying in the other boroughs. I try to stay near a subway stop. Ton of places around Times Square that will be cheapish. Financial district could be as well, though not as much going on down there.
I usually stay around Grand Central. The Lexington might be a good option.

We always stay at the SoHo Grand. Great hotel and location.

NYC is much, much safer than New Orleans. Not a good comparison at all.

NOMAD area. Hilton Martinque, Virgin Hotel, Ritz Carlton, James hotel many others. Go to Oscar Wildes
Herald Square subway stop gets all the lines. Central to the city. Safe area. Great food
Macys, Bryant Park, MSG all walking distance

My wife and daughters (10 and 12) just stayed at Nono Soho with friends for a girls trip and never had any issues or felt unsafe

All of Manhattan is pretty safe
Any areas that aren’t safe, she has no business in

I like Hell's kitchen. Inexpensive. Close to everything. Metro service. Must restaurants per block in the city.

We just went and the refinery hotel is a good spot.

I doubt this baw has ever even been to NYC. None of Manhattan is like NOLA in any way I can describe. I say that having lived close to two decades near both. Pick an area and figure out what you want to do there. Don’t try and do too much and don’t think you found a great hidden gem deal.

Stayed at the Hudson (now closed) in Midtown while my wife was on a business trip. Hells Kitchen street food festival was going on while we were there. It was absolutely amazing.
That whole area was so walkable and fun. It was at the time when Chang/Tossi' were just getting popular, and I'll never forget just walking down the street and being like, "Holy shite! That's the Milk Bar." and then going in and dropping 30 bucks on some of Tossi's desserts then walking to Central Park and just sititng in the park eating crack cookies.

My daughter is a huge theater buff so midtown / Hells Kitchen, Times Square area usually works best for us. I just booked a New Years trip for the daughter and wife and go good rates at The Time NYC by Hyatt.
We've stayed there once before. Nothing special but convenient and safe.

Definitely check out the Upper West Side or Astoria in Queens. Both are pretty safe and not too pricey compared to other parts of NYC.

I have relatives who have lived in NOLA and Manhattan. Nobody young or old have ever been the victim of a crime. Maybe experience in both cities is good training for situational awareness?
In NYC boroughs like Brooklyn and Bronx you can quickly wander from a hip gentrified neighborhood to a scary housing project. Don't plan a walking route from a map without knowing what's along the way.
In Manhattan traditional wisdom is to stay south of the northern edge of Central Park. That's not quite as important today, but attractions like Cathedral of St John the Divine and Columbia University are better visited in the daylight.
Anywhere in the city it's a good idea to avoid warehouse areas that are empty...stay where people gather.
As for public transportation, the subway is fastest but I like buses. Routes are pretty simple, you can see the sights, and now all you need is a credit card to pay.
