Curious to see how his acting chops grade out on TD.

Mediocre? Good?... Great?

I would grade him as above average but he's one of those guys that seems to shine more in a supporting or ensemble role rather than a leading man. Kind of like a British Kevin Bacon.

And his recent work doesn't seem to register much - that HBO show about the serpentine Pope and some arthouse films that fell flat. Maybe he's just on cruise control now.

I would say…almost…underwhelming? He clearly has the chops to be in Best Actor type stuff but he chooses really shitty stuff to be in a lot

He’s not a bad actor by any means. I just think he could choose his roles more carefully and be in that top tier group of actors. But like someone else said, it’s like he’s on cruise control

Very good, much more versatile than he gets credit for.

I brought him up in another thread about actors that fell off/disappeared. He was A list for a while, and I know he’s still working but it’s like his career just vanished.

He takes some risks doing movies that aren’t terrible just meh. But there aren’t many bad Jude Law performances.

He is a very, very good actor. My favorite is probably Gattaca. Sherlock also.

very good, "Great rating" would be reserved for Christian Bale type actors in my opinion. Jude Law is pretty damn good though, he can carry a movie on his own any day.

Honestly I tend to watch new films more so for who directed them as much as who the main actor is. Lots of shitty movies with top actors. Also can be said for directors but I tend to have better results going the director route. I always check out Ridley Scott, Denis Villeneuve, Christopher Nolan, Guy Ritchie, Quentin Tarantino, David Fincher's films. They are USUALLY a "sure thing" with a few misses throw in there.

I'll second this, I thought he gave a pretty good performance in that one. It probably helps that for some reason that movie resonated will me, I've done numerous rewatches

I forgot the name of the movie right now but I also thought he was pretty good in that movie where he's chasing Tom Hanks around trying to put a hit on him.

He was perfect in The Talented Mr. Ripley and very good in Road to Perdition, Enemy at the Gates, and Sherlock Holmes. Very good to great category. Upper class playboy is his wheel house.

He played trailer-park dirtbag pretty amazingly in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.

I thought the Young Pope was genius. He was nominated for an Emmy and Golden Globe in both seasons.

I'm most impressed with how he salvaged his hairline about fifteen years ago. I'd like to hear how he did that.

The Young Pope was really good. Donn't know how it did with viewership/ratings, didn't seem like it did that well, but it is very good and worth a watch for sure.

I'm not ashamed to say I even like him in Cold Mountain with his bad country accent. Didn't really get the accent down but he was still really good in it.

fricking love Cold Mountain. and yeah, i dont begrudge him the accent problem. he's a Brit doing an American accent then doing an American SOUTH accent on top of that.

great movie though
