Apple Tries to Rein In Hollywood Spending After Years of Losses

After spending more than $20 billion to produce original TV shows and movies that not a lot of people watch, Apple is starting to refine its strategy in Hollywood.
Based on interviews with more than a dozen people, including former employees, current employees and business partners, Apple services boss Eddy Cue has been having regular meetings with studio chiefs Zack Van Amburg and Jamie Erlicht to go over budgets, pushing them to exert more control over spending on projects. Van Amburg and Erlicht have told some of their top creative partners that they want to change their reputation as the biggest spender in town, according to these people.
Apple doesn’t buy the most projects in Hollywood — that is still Netflix. But it splurges on individual titles. The studio spent more than $500 million combined on movies from directors Martin Scorsese, Ridley Scott and Matthew Vaughn, and upward of $250 million on the World War II miniseries Masters of the Air, one of more than a dozen new series released this year.
Those pictures were all disappointments at the box office, and only Killers of the Flower Moon registered in Nielsen’s rankings of the most-popular streaming titles. Masters of the Air delivered a smaller US audience than House of Ninjas, a Netflix show in Japanese, according to Nielsen. Even so, it’s the only new Apple show this year to appear in Nielsen’s rankings.
Apple is spending billions of dollars a year on original programming that has received strong reviews and many awards nominations. But its streaming service is attracting just 0.2% of TV viewing in the US. Apple TV+ generates less viewing in one month than Netflix does in one day.
“Subscriber growth has been weak, with the platform’s original content a fraction of what rivals offer,” Bloomberg Intelligence analysts Geetha Ranganathan and Kevin Near wrote in a recent note.

I don't know anyone with Apple+

I guess picking quality over quantity has hurt them. Apple+ doesn't put out a ton of stuff compared to Netflix but most of the stuff they do is quality TV. Especially their Sci-Fi. Definitely the most underrated streaming service. For sure a better service right now than Amazon, Hulu, and Paramount.

Nobody watches their shows, but Apple+ is easily the most consistent in terms of quality. Especially the sci-fi genre.

Apple has prestige/tent pole content, but it doesn't have much every day content. There's a reason Netflix's top viewed shows are always back seasons of shows with a ton of episodes like Grey's Anatomy or Suits. That's what gets people to use your platform regularly so you know when the tent pole show comes back with a new season.

It’s been that way for quite a while with the plethora of pseudo reality shows and make shift game shows plastered everywhere on TV. It also doesn’t help Apple that they were part of the proliferation of everyone needs their own streaming service. I have Apple TV+ (usually on free trials) and enjoy their content quite a bit, but I can see being in the minority there.

Ted Lasso was the only content they had with actual broad appeal.

Not good news for severance which is an elite show.

I've never had Apple+, and I would bet their content is awesome - it looks great. And I want to watch plenty of their shows....
I have no interest in purchasing yet another streaming service. It would have to replace something I have and Netflix/Prime are tough to maneuver around. If I give up one, I'm usually grabbing Hulu or YTV for a few months to catch up with content - and they come more content.
I limit myself to two streaming options at once. Plus, I in general detest most of Apple's policies and decisions. Thunderbird ports, etc. And just cannot support that kind of company.

Apple is what HBo used to be. Smaller collection of above average to elite shows.
Severance
Shrinking
Dark Matter
Masters of the Air
Ted Lasso (S1&2 anyway)
Silo
Rival a lot of the current/recent best from other streaming platforms.
Just doesn’t have staying power unless they have a new show in the tank.

Season 2 is in post-production so it’s too late for this to affect the budget. But when season 3 comes out in 2029 we may see a drop in quality.
A part of me hopes they end it on a high-note with season 2 instead of making me wait so long again.

I tried it out with a 7 day free preview because the Braves were playing on a Friday night on Apple+
After the game I poked around the platform and thought it was awful so I canceled the subscription before I forgot about it and they charge me

I may be in the minority but I think most of the Apple stuff is good, not great. I liked Shrinking a lot but honestly I haven’t thought about that show until I just now saw it mentioned in this thread. If I never got Season 2 of Silo I don’t think I would lose any sleep. The old HBO comparison falls short in my opinion. There is no Sopranos or Game of Thrones. Ted Lasso is really the only mass appeal show and I think most people agree it limped to the finish.
My favorite Apple show was probably Blackbird and that was a mini series, so nothing to bring me back for more.

I have Apple TV+ and actually love it. I don't watch a mountain of tv any more but most of their programming is good, just not shite that the masses want to watch.

Foundation is one of my favorite shows of the past several years.

I got lambasted on this board for saying the apparently latest in the line of "Band of Brothers" and "The Pacific" was "relegated to Apple+." I still don't even know what that new series is called.
Apple+ isn't worth purchasing. I'll watch their shows whenever they get purchased by another streaming service after Apple+ goes under.

The only reason I have it is because it’s bundled in my Apple One sub but I’m glad I have it.
Everything they do is pretty good.
