Anti-Inflammatory for Arthritis
Posted on 7/19/24 at 2:07 pm

Over the years pain from arthritis (mainly elbow and shoulder) has gradually increased and I adapted - limited movement, less lifting, etc.
A couple of weeks ago my dentist prescribed Ketorolac for some dental inflammation - within 36 hours my arthritic pain was gone and I realized how bad it had gotten. But the prescription was only a few days worth and the pain has returned.
Without killing my liver with anti-inflammatory over-the-counter meds, does anyone have advice on what I can do or take to at least reduce the pain somewhat?
Thanks in advance.

turmeric at ~2,000 mg/day
i get this from Costco and it's done amazing things for my knees and elbows but I've referred lots of friends/family who report similar results with other brands
takes a week or two to kick in but when it does, WOW it's nice to suddenly realize "hey my knees aren't hurting any more!"

Last year - a doctor gave me Diclofenac in topical gel form for a shoulder injury. Worked pretty good. I think you can get a over the counter version called Voltaren.
My wife loves Arnicare.

Hope it works for you but I tell this story every chance i get:
I was referred to turmeric by a friend who's also a naturopath. I was extremely skeptical but my knees and elbows were driving me crazy. I had the experience I described above of suddenly realizing the pain was gone. Still skeptical, I went off the turmeric and the pain came back. Resumed taking it, pain went away.
Say what you want about peer reviewed studies but that's enough to convince me.

Turmeric + collagen for me was like the fountain of youth.

Anti-inflammatories won’t burn out your liver, but they will burn your kidneys out and cause stomach issues.
I generally prescribe Mobic 15mg for two weeks at a time and it cools off the inflammation. Some topical Diclofenac (Voltaren) would also be something to look into.
If you’re having that bad of a pain, maybe look into getting a steroid in your elbow and/or shoulder. I inject tennis elbow all the time and that cools it off.
Some gentile exercises will go a long way for both of those issues you stated.

Biofreeze
It comes in many different formulations ( roll on ball… spray.. whatever you could want )
It’ll be next to the aleve and ibuprofen and all that at any drug store
Can’t tell you how many little old arthritic ladies swear by that stuff . It’s been out forever and I don’t think I’ve ever had a single person get mad that it didn’t work for them

Turmeric + collagen
I've been taking collagen daily for about a year and plan to continue just "because" but I haven't noticed any difference - very surprised.

I tried adding collagen to my regimin when I broke a leg a couple years ago and didn't notice any difference but to be fair (a) I was mending a broken tibia, and (b) I used it for ~40-60 days and I believe that collagen takes longer to show benefits.

NSAIDS don't impact the liver. They are hard on the kidneys though if taken for an extended period of time. Acetaminophen is hard on the liver.

I had some weird arthritis going on in my hands that came on pretty rapidly. I suspect it is something like Rheumatoid Arthritis. I went full carnivore and after a few weeks it disappeared. Still full carnivore going on 2 months and arthritis is gone

I have terrible arthritis in my shoulder from BJJ. I take Mobic 7.5 during acute periods, but I recommend doing weighted lying snow angels during each workout (light weight). Band pull aparts are good as well. Mobility work has made a huge difference and I hardly take the Mobic anymore.

This. I had lumbar arthritis. Ketogenic dieting solved it. I also take Vit D+K2, NAC, and Vit C in high doses. If your immune system is awry, try to fix it. The advice here to start taking steroid shots should be a last resort. Typical allopathy nonsense.

How so? What makes steroid shots for arthritis "Typical allopathy nonsense"?

Ketorolac is a pretty strong nasaid. I took it post shoulder ligament surgery and was advised to discontinue after 4 days. Thought it was interesting that the surgeon was fine with giving me 60 Percocets but only 4 days of ketorolac.
