If gifted $100,000 how would you invest it (besides on hookers and blow)?

Here we go again.

It really depends on your situation. We really need the variables in your life to help you with this answer. Are you old? Young? Kids? Job situation? Own a house? Just want to park it and if so, how long? Risk tolerance?

The last two weeks I put six figures into a private equity group for the company my wife works for and a down payment for 140 acres in South Texas that came up for sale next to my place in South Texas.

If I woke up tomorrow with another 100k that magically appeared I would back door my Roth for 2024(haven’t done that yet) and put the other 93k in Cintas stock.

43 years old, married. Not rich but not poor, 2 kids 15 and 12yrs old.

House will be paid off within next 18 months.

Just looking for somewhere to park it till I retire.

Park it in VOO, if your retirement age isn't until 55+ you'll be fine. Likely make more over the time versus a savings account.

BITO. Tracks Bitcoin growth and pays a monthly dividend that is bigger than any stock or dividend fund.

This scenario has happened to me in the past with life insurance or selling a home. To be honest, nothing really changes. You keep executing whatever investment strategy you had before usually or you do something you’ve been thinking about but didn’t have the needed cash for like buying land or doing a business deal that had a minimum investment requirement. In my experience, $100,000 doesn’t really change your life like people think it would.

Correct, it’s not a lot of money. Thats why I’m looking to put it somewhere it can grow for when I’m ready to retire.

$15,000 vacation. $85,000 in VOO. Watch it double twice until you retire in presumably 20 years.

Don’t overthink this unless you have an immediate need. Buy a total stock market fund and be done with it.

Fund your tax advantaged accounts first. If you don’t have these, set up a Roth IRA. Fully fund whatever is available from your employer. Pay off any debt financed at more than 5%. After that, I’d probably park the remainder in a high yield account making 5% or more and start dollar cost averaging on a weekly basis into an S&P500 index or total stock market index. You want to set up an investing habit you can sustain into the future.

Follow Pelosi’s investment portfolio tracker like a Hawk and the next time she pumps you’ve found your answer. (Obviously joking but she can’t miss)
