I'm a pilot- can I hunt from the plane?

I hear for the young deer you just don't lead them as much.

You'd be better off flying commercial and inviting a friend willing to pay for both of yalls airfare in exchange for a hunt.

As already stated, go commercial.
I don’t think you realize how expensive it is to fly a private plane that far and back. Additionally, it would have to be a fairly large plane to carry bags, gear, guns and hopefully ice chests full of meat on the way home. Drives costs up significantly. Fuel, oil, maint and insurance costs. Prob about $1000 to $1500 an hour for a reasonably sized aircraft, could easily be more. 800 miles each way, probably about 4 hours each way. Cost to the pilot would prob be 6 to 10k. Maybe more. Kinda steep for a deer hunt.

Dude could buy 2 Willie Nelson busses for what it would cost to fly comfortably.

I am a pilot, I own my own plane in Slidell, I hunt whitetail.......as others have stated let me put numbers on this for you. Flight from Slidell to Peoria is about six hours. Fuel required will be around 55 gallons so a stop would have to be made. Lets say Olive Branch, Ms. is where we stop for fuel and a piss break. Fuel there is now $5.30 a gallon.. Fuel at Peoria is $6.45. Lets average that at $5.88 a gallon. 55 gallons for the one way is around $325 so a round trip is going to be around $650. Here is something you probably are not thinking. Private pilots can only split the cost of fuel. So, on top of my time, my plane (insurance, maintenance, and mortgage) I only have half of the fuel paid for? Those deer better be B&C candidates.

Edit to add: I flew earlier this year from Slidell to French Lick Indiana, then Memphis and back to Slidell. Total fuel was 91 gallons.

See where I am going with this? Sounds good on the surface but not so good in practice. You are better off driving..

My son is working on his pilots license now. He should have his private in a few months.

Do you have a plane?
