Pretty crazy for how this game stormed out of the gates and then fell off a cliff.

The simultaneous release of Helldivers 2 on PlayStation and PC helped make it a huge hit, especially on PC where it hit 458,709 concurrent players two weeks after launch. But that was indeed the peak, and it has declined 90% in four months, down to 44,093 peak concurrent players. As such, it is routinely outside the top 10 list, and is #58 in top sellers on the service. The most-viewed Twitch stream of the game at this moment has 56 viewers.

For me it was in the following order. Curious to hear everyone else's thoughts.

1 Difficulty tweaking was done terribly. It went from enjoyable to absolute nightmare and untenable. I didn't even make it up to extreme/impossible because I started to see the clips of two dozen bile titans storming a landing point with a minute to go or multiple dropships landing on top of groups. Pointless then.

2 Game crashing. When I started to slow down was when my game would invariably crash every other session, meaning I lost usually 30 minutes of effort instantly.

3 Weapon tweaking was done terribly. Just randomly nerfing things and making certain encounters become a tedious chore rather than a quick challenge. I'm thinking of the dive out of a Charger's way and shoot its butt three times before doing it again. Repeat ad nauseam.

4 Mission structure needed work. This isn't a game that should require you to spend 10 minutes running across a vast expanse as often as it did. Missions could legit take five minutes or 30 minutes and the rewards weren't distributed equally to reflect that.

5 New strategems felt useless. Given that we only had four slots, when they started add more in that weren't significant upgrades there was just no point.

this was the biggest thing for me. i get wanting the player to struggle a bit but it seemed like nothing was good at one point weapon wise

No staying power.

It's fun to jump in for a couple missions but I have zero desire to do that over and over again for hours. There really isn't much to the game.

Weapon/stratagem nerfing was one thing. It always felt like punishing the players for finding metas. They took an antagonistic approach (especially in the community) when they should have been more altruistic and just buffed underperforming weapons/stratagems. They’re adopting the latter stance now, but the damage was done.

Ultimately though, it was the severe lack of late game incentive for players. I had no problem with repetitive missions and such, but once I’d unlocked everything in the war bonds, got all the bonus cosmetics, reached my resource caps at all levels, and found my niche load out…what was my incentive to keep playing? “For democracy” was funny for a while, but with everything capped, the only thing worth grinding for was super credits to unlock more cosmetics that I already had.

I’ll probably be back when the new faction gets launched, but it sucks to see a game with so much potential fall off like it did. It was always going to happen, but some misjudgments by devs caused the downfall to accelerate.

This is what ruined the game for me. But it wasn't just one patch with terrible nerfs, it was repeated patches where they kept making nonsensical nerfs over and over again. Couple that with the fact that devs were making random nerfs because they didn't like the way people were playing the game because it didn't align with their vision.

THAT was when they lost me.

the constant tweaking and nerfing of things really was off putting for me. its a dumb human team game with no pvp. who cares if things are OP. it was fun.

it also wasnt really built for staying power either. its a fun formula for a time but its very repetitive. its a fun as game dont get me wrong, buts its about as deep as a puddle.

Loyal? There's just not new content, it was a cheap game from a small studio. Not a huge amount of incentive to play anymore, with even mediocre teammates I can clear everything and I rarely die a single time. I suspect a 90% drop-off until new content is added. I would imagine the devs do as well.

Loyalty is earned and earning it becomes more difficult as the amount of other options increases.

The devs made the same mistake many games do in that they try to tweak their games into being more difficult in ways which remove the fun factor. Instead of looking at the weapon meta and saying "we need to bring the other weapons up to that level," they did the kneejerk and nerfed the metas to the level of the less popular weapons.

They also have failed to capitalize on expanding on gear buffs. Capes and helms had no buffs while chests never expanded their buffs to be anything beyond what was available at launch.

This exactly. They could have introduced a bigger gear system or at least made meaningful differences between the gear that could impact playstyle. But nope, when I quit it was the same measly benefits rotated between a few.

it is. its a hobby and a past time not a family member or friend

It'll be just like the first Helldivers and similar to Deep Rock Galactic where you have a smaller passionate fanbase and others who hop back in periodically to see what's changed. Only issues I had were random crashes, chargers sliding all over, and the lack of stuff to do after unlocking everything.

After a certain point you just don't have much of a reason to fire it up unless you just want to kill bugs/bots for the hell of it.

I had a great time with the game and leveled up to 101. The first nerf that got me going sideways was the railgun...i loved it until they made it useless. Nerf after nerf in a pve game...what's the point in that? If the good players are dominating a game, its because they are good. I still hop in from time to time but the monotony is overboard. They really havent added anything of value to get me back. Underground missions would be fun, cityscape missions would be fun, just some good variety instead of the usual hot planet, cold planet, forest planet and rotate.

I bought it and played it maybe twice. I liked the cheesyness of the story but didnt enjoy the gameplay. Might have been more fun if i had friends to play with but none of my friends bought it

They really did trip over themselves over and over. This isn't an option when you have a game that isn't very dynamic. They probably thought they could have Counter Strike type loyalty, created a game with potential, then said lets frick this up
