Denzel Washington’s Macrinus is an arms dealer who lives lavishly and keeps a stable of gladiators for sport.

Folks were wondering what role Denzel would be playing.

I think this will be decent. Mescal is a fantastic actor (I can’t wait to see him as Shakespeare in Hamnet too). Pascal can be good in this kind of role. I’m looking forward to it.

They dealt with Ethiopians quite a bit, so it’s somewhat plausible. They found the Celts and Gauls to be way more barbaric and scary than the Ethiopians.

Personally, this movie doesn't look great to me, but we'll see I guess.

I've said this before about random black people being added to movies, and I'll say it again. They could make a movie with Denzel playing the whitest character in existence and I'll watch it. I love the dude as an actor.

My thoughts, too. Looks like they just recast a few roles, changed a few names and basically kicked out the same movie.

It may be great, but I'm not terribly intrigued.

quote from the article:
quote:

Nielsen also returns in the sequel, playing one of the few true-life figures in the otherwise fictional Gladiator storyline, the daughter of the late emperor Marcus Aurelius. In the actual history, Lucilla was a firebrand revolutionary who despaired of the direction Rome took after her father’s demise.

That's great, but the real Lucilla was killed by her brother Commodus when she was caught in a plot to assassinate him.

quote:

decades have passed and Lucius has come of age far away from his mother. While he was still a child, Lucilla sent him to the northern coast of Africa, to a region called Numidia that was (at that point) just outside the reach of the Roman Empire.

That's crazy since her son Lucius died when he was 8. He was born in 161, the same year as Commodus.

That has always been my stance. If the character is good, fits the story, and the actor is good I dont care. Idris Elba could play George Washington and I would watch.

The heartbeat of the first one was Maximus’ arc and all the changes he went through until he reached the end. That arc is why audiences connected with the movie on such a lasting, emotional level. Is it even possible to recreate it, chances are no so will they make the mistake of trying to copy that or tell a different story? I think that’ll determine whether it’s successful or not.

I mean it's a sequel picking up the story just 15 year after the first, what did you want it to look like?

Considering modern scores (i.e. since Jaws) it is down to Williams vs Zimmer, Gladiator really is the one he'll be most remembered for, IMHO (maybe along with PotC).

Sure, Lion King is a legend, but the popular songs dominate.

Likewise, Rain Man was great, but it needed to be understated and I don't think folks think about that film for its score.

But, Gladiator's score was the right balance between bombastic and nuanced and functions as an indispensable character to the film (similar to my thoughts about Blade Runner and Vangelis) - and it has the benefit of not being overshadowed by the pop songs like Lion King.

At least, that's my $0.02 on it.

HGW is Ridley's guy now. And, for all practical purposes, he is Zimmer's protege, as Williams was to Mancini.

If they used Ridley’s Gladiator score, people would finally all realize that he already reused it for Pirates of the Caribbean
