It’s past time for GBFTL power brokers to execute a coup d’etat and put the band on the path back to former glory.

Who could we bring home to restore order?

I never understand people complaining about the band as if they’re some kind of disaster. They’ve literally been the exact same for 45 years. I have never had a problem hearing them in the SEZ in all my years attending games.

It took me some time, but being married into the band life, it's known that the band fell off in the early 2010s. It's still a competitive band but TGBFTL has only hired under qualified candidates that originally worked with LSU.

Ever since they ran Roy out of town every director they have hired has just been a puppet of the school of music. They need to go out and do a national search for the best director out there if they truly want to return to the glory days of Tiger Band

The problem is they would really struggle to bring in someone established since most of those people are in good positions already and don’t have attachment to Louisiana. Also, LSU doesn’t necessarily pay great, the people in charge of hiring still use the good-ole-boy network, and you’d need to completely gut most the music department to fix that in service of the band, and that’s not going to happen.

Guy from Auburn should have been hired when they shitcanned Roy. He was hired by Auburn in 2007.

quote:

Prior to his appointment at Auburn, Dr. Spurlin received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in wind conducting from Louisiana State University, where he studied with Frank B. Wickes. He served as a Graduate Assistant for the Band Department at LSU where he assisted with the Tiger Marching Band and “Bengal Brass” Pep Band. In addition, he was Graduate Associate Conductor of the LSU Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Winds, and Symphonic Band.

But people have to realize the point of the School of Music was to destroy the Frank Wickes lineage so they could control the band how they wanted so that was never going to happen. Plus Spurlin knows what's going on and is too smart to get involved in that.

Auburn’s band is fun to watch since they got the golden band influence. Sound great and their halftime shows are better than whatever we trot out these days

Should be the first call.

You’re correct. The golden age fallacy always runs rampant in these band threads.

Yup. Corey Spurlin would have been the guy. Not sure how we let that slip away.

LSU’s band was considered one of the best in the nation…for decades.

Now?

When Frank Wickes retired and they snubbed Linda Moorehouse, LSU should've done a nationwide search for a qualified director, but they didn't. They promoted Roy King, which was ok for a while, but Todd Queen and Damon Talley eventually got Roy fired. This started the current trend of hiring unqualified School of Music puppets as the director of Tiger Band.

I agree wholeheartedly that Dr. Spurlin is who LSU should've hired, but he knows about Talley and his shenanigans, so he won't come anywhere near LSU. In the meantime, enjoy Auburn's band. They are what Tiger Band used to be.
