Could you provide healthy meals for your family on the SNAP/Food Stamp allowance?

Louisiana SNAP
Even with current inflation, the amounts seem high. Maximum $973 per month for a family of 4, with an average of $713.
Bear in mind these are “supplemental” benefits. They are expected to spend other money as well, plus with kids they get free school meals.
I could easily feed a family of four with healthy meals on that amount.

How many rib-eyes and crab legs does that buy?

$300 a month is more than I spend on groceries now.
I do eat out more than I should though…..

Family of four.
We spend about 150 a week on walmart/Sams and that is everything we get there, not just food. So 600 a month. And that includes basically every meal, for everyone, every day because we rarely eat out.

Well its just me and the wife so yeah easy.
if we had 2 kids i still think i could do it. I am considering all those funds go to food costs though. (grocery bill limited to just food items, not household items).

Do I get the handicapped tag to go with it?

Also remember that SNAP purchases are not taxed, at all. So your entire allocation of funds is for food.

In the beginning that was the idea of SNAP/Food stamps.
Now they can be used to buy soda and candy.

Probably. We spend about half the $766 we would get now but we buy a bunch of junk we really do not need. A bunch of rice and chicken thighs and some green stuff will make a lot of meals for $766. Not overly healthy but better than fast food and most restaurant meals.

I personally know people that were receiving “food stamps” that would such a surplus on their card they would buy steaks for 12 and have cookout every couple weeks. I’m positive because I grilled the steaks. Also know multiple people that used to purchase other people’s cards. The whole things a fricking scam.

We average about 850 per month for my family of 4 but both my kids are under age 4.

So a family of four gets for free more than I try to spend a month to feed my family of four? fricking ridiculous.

Had a friend in college apply for food stamps.
All we did was BBQ every weekend and eat frozen pizzas every night while playing video games. Living the dream back in 2001.

What determines the max vs the average?
Regardless, yes if I was poor and relied on government assistance, I could provide healthy meals for my family for ~$225 per week.
ETA: chicken thighs, pork chops, ground beef, etc... those are all pretty damn cheap. Same with raw vegetables. Maybe it's "boring" to eat grilled proteins with a side of vegetables/rice, but if you're on food stamps it's supposed to be for sustenance not for enjoyment.

I am 100% certain that no one here would be able to feed a family on the estimated average benefit. For a family of four, it's a bit less than $6/day per person. That's $2/meal. Good luck with that.

Do you ever grocery shop? Do you really think that you couldn't feed a family of 4 on $225/week if you really had to?

POTUS24, you either don't do the grocery shopping, don't know how to cook at home or both. You can easily feed a family of four for $713 a month unless you're raising two offensive lineman or something.

I’m 100% certain you are wrong.
Not even taking into consideration that any school aged children get two (and often 3) free meals a day at school, cooking bulk meals like chili, stew, soups etc can be cooked for very cheap. Grits/oatmeal for breakfast.
These amounts are very generous.
