Just finished listening to Obscured by Clouds and the improvement to Dark Side of the Moon is pretty amazing. Of course that may not be the best example since albums earlier than OBC like Meddle are better than OBC.

Another one Beastie Boys License to Ill to Paul's Boutique. That one probably wins.
Radiohead Pablo Honey to The Bends another.

Going to be hard to beat this. From an album no one talks about to a top 5 all time album of any genre.

The one I thought of was The Connells from Darker Days to Boylan Heights.

Obscured by Clouds was not really a true PF album IMO. It was a soundtrack written for a movie.

License to Ill was wildly successful...Paul's boutique is an "improvement"? They are both great albums.

This is a great example.

Better than Ezra made a huge jump in "Deluxe." I'm not sure if I've heard anything from their first album before it.

Only in popularity. I think Surprise is ten times better.

Pantera Power Metal to Cowboys from Hell

Gonna disagree here. Pantera's early albums get a bad rap, mostly by people who have never heard them. Power Metal is not to be confused with Poison or Warrant or some cheesy glam metal band. Some of the lyrics are cheesy but its got some great Dime riffs and possibly his best solo.

He was still a hair farmer and poser named "Diamond" back then.

None of that changes how much better Cowboys is in comparison.

Its really not. There's more of a gap between CFH and VDOP then there is between Power Metal and CFH.

Lou Reed had a few stinkers in his career.. Metal Machine Music is unlistenable, Lulu is an abomination and Sally Can't Dance was fricking garbage...

But never did he directly bounce back as strong as he did with the brilliant New York... after that turd of a record, Mistrial..
