Going to the beach with the fam this weekend and looking to try my hand at some surf fishing.. we’re staying at the Pheonix East so we’ll have plenty of beach front. I’ve got 2 heavy duty rods I’m planning on sticking in the sand. Any suggestions on bait and line weight would be greatly appreciated. TIA

I'd suggest you watch out for sharks

Do it after the other swimmers show up for the day......natural bait that saves you money.

No. Just go to the pier if you don’t want to charter something.

I find that it's not worth it with any population around you.

Who thinks throwing a hook around numerous people is a great idea?

Fish around Perdido Pass. Don’t hook any wife beater wearing, Miller lite drinking, bad music blaring goobers.

Yep.

Pompano rig, Circle 1/0 or 2/0 hooks. Pyramid or sputnik sinker. Shrimp, Orange Fish bites or Fish Gum. Sand fleas work well too. Use braided 30lb, with 30lb leader, and 15 lb down to the hooks if you make them yourself.

Try to find where the current is going out between the sand bars and place them around there. One real close , one edge of sand bar, one right in between. one on the back side. When you get some hits start targeting the same area. They are a lot closer than you think, no reason to wade out unless going for sharks or something.

I've caught pompano out there plenty.

Find some sand fleas on the beach and hook them on a Carolina rig

I posted this on the Outdoor Board a few weeks ago:

I don't fish there but I can give you some tips for how to fit in with the typical OB/Ft. Morgan fishermen:

Be sure to set up right in front of the largest condo around. Remember to act pissy when kids come out and actually want to play on the beach and in the surf. Be annoyed when people ask you if you are catching anything. Then, pack up all your stuff in a huff and move ever so slightly down the beach while loudly complaining about all these "damn kids" and other people enjoying the beach.

Long sleeve sun shirts (Salt Life is the best to show you are about that salt life) and straw hats are required even if you are on the beach before sunup. Get you one of these:

(This is all in good fun in case someone on here feels like they are reflected too much in this description. )

I never will understand people who go to gulf coast to surf fish from the beach, past 9:00am, which causes everyone else to not be able to use that portion of the water and walk around fishing poles stuck in the sand.

Just go to the pier or rent a charter if you want to fish. It isn't like you going to catch anything you can eat anyway..

Summer is a terrible time, if you do it. Go extremely early or late afternoon when nobody is around. Pier fishing is better during this time of year bc of that.

The beach is really long... there are plenty of places to go where there aren't people.

Um... most things you'll catch are much bigger than any catfish dinner.

Pompano, whiting, red drum, etc.
