You've heard of Raisin' Canes, but have you heard of Layne's Chicken Fingers?
Who copied who? Let's look at the facts:
1st Location:
Cane's: Near LSU campus
Layne's: Near Texas A&M campus
Founding Year?
Cane's: 1996
Layne's: 1994!!
# of Stores:
Cane's: 620+
Layne's: 10
Layne's was a HUGE hit right off the bat, by the way. You think Todd Graves (total rockstar BTW), the founder, didn't borrow some inspiration after a campus visit? Of course he did!

They are all rip offs of Guthries.

Foosackly's too in Alabama.
It’s damn near copyright of Cane’s.
Chicken fingers, toast, fries, and their “Foo” Sauce.

Graves submitted the idea in a business class, unsuccessfully pitched it to investors, worked on an Alaskan fishing boat to raise his own capital, and bought and renovated the old Wolf's Bakery building. So it's unlikely he saw Layne's and did all of that within 2 years.
The idea isn't exactly radical. Two people can independently think of it.

Oh well, sucks to be Lanes.
Hate to admit it but there are good things that come out of aggy land.
Good folks.
sorry, Laynes

I assume the proximity to campus.

Guthrie’s should have found a way to copyright or trademark their sauce- they are the OG
Posted on 6/8/24 at 8:58 pm to Meauxjeaux
They are morons. Todd worked at Guthrie’s. Guthrie’s was popular in the 80s. If anything Layne’s also stole from Guthrie’s.

Canes actually stole the idea from “Baileys” chicken tenders off campus at LSU.
Had the exact same stuff, sauce and all.
Only had 3 Canes on campus by the time I left.
Goes to show you that you don’t ever need to reinvent the wheel to be rich.
*I’ll retract my statement since some posted in a post below with an article that Baileys wasn’t coped by Canes.
But won’t retract the part that it wasn’t an original idea any way you slice it.
