eBay to Stop Accepting American Express on August 17th

Because they have been unable “to agree on terms that are acceptable to eBay.”
How many people will walk away from eBay? Many of us only use AMEX.

Time for VISA to fire up those old "But they don't take American Express" commercials.

It's my main card, but I keep a Visa backup. Some places still don't take AMEX. The produce stand down the road from me and Costco come to mind.

Amex fees to businesses are the highest.

Yes, I mainly use it for hard-to-find parts for my german cars. They are European spec and most parts have to come from Stuttgart or Munich.

I doubt there are that many.. most people have a visa or MC too. A lot of places don't take Amex..

I'm guessing it has to do something with the word "American"

I think the ease and depth of online shopping nowadays makes it difficult to remember the absolutely wild, off the wall shite you can find on eBay.

Businesses like to claim they don't accept Amex because of higher fees. While the fees may be higher, I think it's because of how well Amex handles a chargeback for their cardholders. They don't play around.

Exactly why I'd never own an Amex

The fees are comparable, or it’s negligible considering how many people use AMEX.
AMEX has by far the best customer service and companies don’t typically like customers who have them willing to go to bat when they make a mistake.

They’re sick of Amex having the consumers back and screwing them for fraud.

It's because of the fees and how Amex is the card of choice for scammers.
They almost always side with the buyer, no matter the situation.

If I stopped using ebay I couldn't buy all the stuff that antiquetiger finds at estate sales.
Posted on 6/5/24 at 6:50 pm to RFK
It'll have me lots of money but my card collection won't grow

Or you can quit whining and just use PayPal and get around the Amex ban.

This is true.
Also why I only use Amex for online purchases.
