Tipping percentage increase

Was talking to my Dad (61 years old) this weekend about how expensive the wife's anniversary dinner was at Ruth's Chris. I told him the tip on that kind of dinner always aggravates me as the tip was over $50. He told me that was crazy and that he had no idea the tipping percentage went up. He said he still always tips at 15%. I told him as far as I knew, as long as I had been alive it was 20%. When did this change, or is he just an old tightwad?

15% is still acceptable for average service IMO.

It went from 15% to 18% to 20%

The "avg" shifted from 15-18% in the late 90's and early 00's. I am not aware of it really being adjusted since then as 15-20% is still considered "normal"

I was at 20 during Covid. I’ve gone back to 15…. sometimes 18 if good service.

Some people think a 20% tip is what should be the minimum.
Tipping expectations are out of control.

Oh boy. OT and tipping. 20 pages.
It changed sometime in the late 80's, early 90's.
I always figured there was some Server's Union involved that ran an ad campaign or something.
Not to mention that 15% caused a ton of people to carry wallet sized tipping charts. 20% was pitched as an easy "move the decimal and double" option.

18% = double the tax

My policy has always been the server starts at 18%. Their performance moves them up or down from that point. Average keeps it at 18%.

I have no problem tipping above average for a great server or bartender. A few extra bucks goes a long way for a lot of them and it can make their night. I do however hate being forced to tip for a service that should not require it. That pisses me off, especially when they expect it and your put on the spot.

I generally do that for adequate service. I'll go 20-25% if the service is excellent, and 15% or so if it isn't great. Thankfully, I've never had just absolute dogshit service to where I'd want to tip lower (or zero).

Since a large percentage of the population can’t do math anymore, many restaurants put the “suggestions” at the bottom of the check. I don’t know if I’ve seen these deviate from 15%, 18%, and 20%.

My dad always tipped 15% and taught me that as well. It seems that 18% became more of the norm in the past 10-15 years. If you are paying on one of those small card readers with the touch screen, I've even seen the pre-populated options for tipping start at 20%, up to 24%.
With food prices over inflated, I am not paying more than 18%.

Well I'm black......so I tip no more than 13% with a max of $50.

I have recently had several places ask me if I "want my change"? Is this a thing now?
frick right I want that money. It's mine.

It's been 20% for more than a decade where I live. I've always been happy to give that and more but been seeing the option and pressure to give 25 now. F that, we are paying more for product and service and getting less these days already.

Depends on amount of bill and time spent in establishment. Oh, also the server.
