The U.S. Department of Agriculture approved emergency financial relief for struggling crawfish farmers and fisherman for a 2024 harvest that is down 50-90% across Louisiana, according to the Louisiana State University Agricultural Center. However, the cash might not be enough to save next year's season.

"Louisiana’s crawfish aquaculture industry will experience impacts from the 2023 drought for several seasons before an economic recovery is complete," wrote the Ag Center's Greg Lutz on TheFishSite.com. "Should drought conditions return before that takes place, the industry will be drastically transformed from the one we have come to know."

Crawfish season is winding down across Louisiana, which produces about the majority of the nation's crawfish every year, according to the Louisiana Crawfish Promotion and Research Board. Just in time for the summer heat, the mudbugs will burrow into the mud to spawn. But last year, a series of weather and climate disasters killed many. The high mortality rate of the crawfish meant fewer seeds for next year's crop..

I'm 47 years old. I've eaten enough throughout my life to never have them again if need be!

I just went to a Texas crawfish boil (work event) put on by someone from Arkansas. I’m good on crawfish for at least a year now.

I was surprised to see prices fall below $3 per pound given all the doom and gloom over the winter and the early high prices. They also weren’t hard to find. I’ve always thought that they keep prices artificially high through Easter because Easter’s date varies wildly and I would think crawfish production should be predictable with the calendar based on normal weather patterns. So maybe this highlighted some of the collusion going on that’s been surmised for years.

same.......well, i'm 51, but i haven't even eaten any this year. i love them, but as i've gotten older, for health reasons, would tend to eat them 1-2 times a year. just haven't even had the urge this year.

I see they are already throwing out their talking points for next year.

You can get crawfish easily now. This isn’t February/March.

the place I get them in Ft. Worth started the season about $5/lb. higher than normal but they were back down to regular prices within a month, they were some of the nicest, fullest crawfish I’ve had in years, and less dead ones per sack than ever (they get them from south Louisiana)

I’m not crawfish biologist but what’s their normal lifespan like 1-4 years? An animal with a lifespan like that can rebound with proper farming almost instantly.

Why are they so cheap now? Getting live for less than 2 bucks a pound and they are big, healthy crawfish.

I'm already waiting to hear on why next year's crop is somehow having some problem.

Every year.. Some new crisis.

If you don't pay exorbitant prices for pond scavengers, you don't give two shits about the pond scavenger industry collapsing. The snowball stands will be fine.
