LA conservative legislature fixes another major problem in state

House Bill 156 passed the upper chamber on a 26-11 vote. That bill carried by Rep. Roger Wilder, R-Denham Springs, would eliminate a requirement in state law that 16 and 17-year-old workers receive a 20-minute lunch break when they work five or more hours at a time.
Wilder's bill outraged Democrats and child labor advocates; but the sponsor, who owns a number of Smoothie King franchises in the Deep South, said he was simply trying to give workers more opportunity to earn wages while they're on the clock.
Come on man! He’s not going to give them an extra 20 min paid. Instead of being paid 6 hr over a 6 hr 20 min shift, they will be paid 6 hr over a 6 hr shift.
But he can now adjust schedules to not have to cover lunch breaks. That will save him a little money.
What percentage of smoothie king workers are 16 or 17, outside of school hours? 75%? More?

We all know how democrats are gonna spin this.
Correction, we all know how democrats are going to successfully spin this to their advantage.

How do I know you've never created a single job in your lifetime?

What?
It’s a 30 minute break, don’t know where 20 came from. And if they only take a 29 minute break the government fines you more than you pay the teen.
So who is the real bad guy?

As a person who had jobs as a teenager under this law, I absolutely got paid 4hr 40m for my 5hr shift. If I have to be there, I would have rather gotten paid.

I'd argue eliminating meddlesome bureaucratic bullshite like this is pretty much the bedrock of what "conservatism" should be.
Although, I'm not so naive as to not understand that Louisiana's legislative "republicans" are happy to be as meddlesome as they can be in many other areas.
I'm just not gonna gripe about eliminating silliness like this.
Muh, they want our kids starving in sweat shops for their profits!

Shocker. The guy will save a few thousands a year in labor costs in exchange for further tarnishing conservative advancement.

Cajuns didn't care about these laws back when I was a kid. I was given a job at age 15 (probably illegal) to clean the bottom of a country club swimming pool after it's exposure to fall and winter without a cover or filter running.
I was paid less than minimum wage (probably illegal).
After 2 days of failing to clean it by diving down in the water I explained that the pool needed to be drained first so the dirt wouldn't just settle back.
A fire truck pumped out the water exposing the 4 water moccasins that had been watching me clean. Cajuns didn't care about OSHA.

I’m glad this new administration is tackling the important issues facing our state so far this year!!

The "this is to protect the businesses when kids clock in early from lunch" excuse doesn't pass the smell test. And I'm guessing whichever government entity gave him the fines didn't think that excuse was legitimate either.

I support the bill.
I hated the stupid break requirements when I was an hourly worker at that age working in fast food. You are forced by law to take the break whether you need it or not. It’s dumb.

Want to know how to give labor unions a foothold in your state? Repeal child labor laws and force children to work 8 hour shifts with no breaks.

It went through a chamber, it didn't even go to a full house vote yet. Nothing about this bill has passed

You know what grinds my gears are places that expect you to be at work 10 or 15 minutes before your shift starts and you can’t clock in until 8 am. Then when everyone in management is racing to leave at 5 pm. You are stuck there finishing your work because they need it quick and they have no concept of time when they ask for something and give you no time to prepare or continue saddle you with your other responsibilities.
On the flip side Walmart got in trouble a few years ago when most stores closed at 9 pm. They would lock the front doors and while management might be busy balancing the tills or tending to the overnight crew, they would forget to let the employees that were scheduled to get off or clock out at 9 pm. Some employees that even waited to punch when they officially left the store were penalized by the managers going back and pencil whipping the clock to reflect the 9 pm end of shift.

Almost certainly far less.
Not many businesses are hiring workers who can't work past 8pm and can't start till after school hours.
