I just don’t think they’re going to go after that guy if they’re giving up BI and don’t get a startable C in the trade so they can take Sheppard

@TigerinATL

It could look something like this?

Why does Cleve do this? 22 million in expiring they can use at the Trade Deadline to sure up their roster for another playoff run.

Weak draft makes it cheaper to move up.

BI + Nance + #21 + future 1st

We don't even have to make it a future 1st. We can use the Lakers pick and our own and provide two picks in this year's draft.

On the one hand, rookies generally suck, and making a move like this signals that we aren't going to try to contend in the next year or two. On the other hand, it does help as a salary reset to enable us to pay TMIII and stay below the tax longer term.

But a top draft pick would certainly be exciting, sell tickets, and energize the fan base.

The trade I proposed above leaves Pels with plenty of salary and picks to go get that center

We could even send 2025 1sts (ours and Lakers) along with the Adams expiring deal to Cleveland for Allen, add another pick if they want.

So out: Ingram, 21, 2-3 1sts

In: Jabari Smith Jr, Reed Sheppard, Jarrett Allen, Jeff Green

On another note. Weren't we supposed to decide if we are deferring the Lakers pick today also? Anyone has any clue if they did or not? Still seeing mock drafts with the Pelicans picking with the Lakers pick.

We will definitely be deferring it, no need to take it this year

I thought we had until June 21 (or something like that) to decide on deferring the pick. I'm 99% sure we didn't have to decide today.

For some reason I thought they had to decide by the lottery.

No, there's a big chance we use it in a trade. I would actually bet that we do not defer.

The Pelicans can choose to take the No. 17 pick from the Lakers, or they can wait a year and take their unprotected 2025 pick. The latter is the expectation at this moment, but New Orleans has until June 1 to make a final decision.

Ok. Found the answer.

What would you bet on this?

ETA: you have no idea what LeBron is going to do, and you won’t know before you have to make the decision. How stupid would you look if you just accept pick 17 this draft and then LeBron leaves and the Lakers suck next season? No one is going to blame you if you defer the pick and it ends up being pick 25 next season.

Not sure we are on same topic. In a weak draft you don’t give up good pieces to move up imo. ]

Very weak draft. It figures Griffin would want to move to the top of this draft.

Do you really think that they want to move to the top of the draft? Or are they just attempting to gauge value for BI? I doubt seriously that the Pels actually move into the top of the draft.

Who would we even target if we got into the top 5? Clingan?

Sarr, Clingan, Sheppard, Dillingham all fit easily with Sarr being the riskiest player of that group. Topic could be a fit too if his FT shooting is an indication of his 30% 3pt FG being fixable

Umm, GM’s in panic mode go all out to acquire vets, not draft picks.

Yeah, I'm changing my mind. The more I think about it, the more I realize that any BI trade likely gets done on draft night, and we have to decide on the Lakers pick way before that. So, we'll probably defer, although it is possible that a BI deal happens before June 1st and includes that pick.
