We're probably not being told the whole story. If you're consistently working 80-100 hours a week from a desk job, you didn't die from the work itself, you probably died from abusing stimulants, whether that be caffeine or, most likely, Adderall, and then, obviously, no sleep.

To do that amount of hours on a consistent basis, stimulants are almost always involved.

I used to work 100 hour weeks on the road for months on end, fueled by youth, whiskey, and copious quantities of Adderall. I knew I had to get out and change my life or I was going to die. No human being works themselves to death behind a computer screen and telephone without the aid of drugs to do it. It's not possible. Physiologically, it's not possible unless obesity were to get you.

In a coal mine circa 1929, a rice paddy in Vietnam circa 1969, a LeBron James Chinese sweat shop circa 2024? Sure. You could work yourself to death, but you're not dying from being behind a computer in the year 2024 unless you are pushing your body to the absolute limit with sleep, and that requires drugs to get to that point.

Just say no to shitty employers. And drugs. Especially from doctors.

My wife made 60-72k during a five-year residency working 75-85 hours a week. Both physically and mentally enduring, critically thinking while operating for hours at a time.

I think the frat bros will survive

A lot of places are like this. Consulting jobs can abuse juniors, but the upside is huge.

My first job out of college had me flying cross country every week, taking the red eye back to ATL with expectation of being in the office that day. It was insane, but fun.

I have no sympathy for them. They usually end up as a managing director or a cushy corporate job. Having been on the other side of it, their main job is packaging info and trying to sell it, or to repackage info from corporate teams to provide the C Suite cover for their decisions.

One of my favorite stories was when my boss asked a managing director from JP Morgan what their job was in an IPO. Knowing that my boss is a gambler, I explained to him they’re essentially bookies. The guy from JP Morgan blustered a bit but had to admit I was right.

So, they accepted jobs that they knew required crazy hours, and the companies expected them to put in crazy hours.

Shocking.

My take? frick em. There are a million jobs where you can relax and get paid 1/3 of what they earn. No one is forcing them to take and continue in these jobs, and there are a thousand people that want to do it for every one person that can't hack it. What say you?

I would rather do that than hard, grueling manual labor for $20 per hour (or less).

This isn't much different than associate lawyers at big firms, or medical residents.

Part of me feels bad and part of me is like, they're making a lot of money and choose to do this.

Maybe this makes me lazy, but I very-much have a work to live and not live to work type of mindset, so I'd rather make less money and have better work-life balance than work more hours and just be miserable.

The tough environment of IB is not a secret. Of course there are a lot of people that think they want that life and later figure out it isn't for them. They should walk away before it consumes them. Leaving IB is not the end of the world.

160k does not get you to first base in the big apple, not anymore. I got 40% in taxes 15 grand in rent, school loans, car loans, food, park my car that’s three bills a month I need good suits that’s 400 bucks a pop. But it will all be worth it when I land the whale.

It’s their decision, they know what they are getting into

Why would I care about what decisions other adults make for themselves?
