One recent entry, Willi Carlisle, When the Pills Wear Off:

Father forgive me for what I have done
Drove 200 miles for six inches of love
And he shined like the neon in the town’s only bar
Slick as the needle and slim as the scar
I lost friends to heroin, plenty more to lovin’ them

Strung out on the highway like we couldn’t read the signs
Now that I am older and burn a little colder
I know how to read between the lines

But the only time I get these guilty thoughts
Is when the pills wear off
And what I called a love affair
They say was a death of despair
They say I’ll get over him I just need time

I think Jesus sent an angel, stuck needles in his thigh
And the old freight trains, they whistle and whine
They shake the whole damn house, like we did when he was alive
I lost friends to heroin, plenty more to lovin’ them
Strung out on the highway like we couldn’t read the signs
Now that I am older and burn a little colder
I know how to read between the lines

But the only time I get these guilty thoughts
Is when the pills wear off
And what I called a love affair
They say was a death of despair
Mother don’t ask me the things I have done
It’s selfish to fall for yourself in someone
I know that I want him and always will
I don’t think he could have known that it was fentanyl

But the only time I get these guilty thoughts
Is when the pills wear off
And what I called a love affair
They say was a death of despair
The only time I get these guilty thoughts
Is when the pills wear off

A baseball bat, a baseball bat
Beside my bed
I'll wait around and wait around
And wait
I hear a noise, I hear a noise
Well I hear something
I am alone, you win again
I'm paralyzed

I drift away, I'll drift away
Am I asleep yet?
I hear a scream, I see me scream
Is it from memory?
Am I awake? Am I alone?
When is it sunrise?
A baseball bat, a thing of mace
Where did I leave it?

That thing of mace, that thing of mace
Where did I leave it?
A psychopath, a psychopath
He says he loves me
And I'm alone and I am cold
And paralyzed
I can't move

The car's on fire and there's no driver at the wheel, and the sewers are all muddied with a thousand lonely suicides. And a dark wind blows. The government is corrupt, and we're on so many drugs with the radio on and the curtains drawn. We're trapped in the belly of this horrible machine and the machine is bleeding to death. The sun has fallen down and the billboards are all leering, and the flags are all dead at the top of their poles.

It went like this: the buildings toppled in on themselves, mothers clutching babies picked through the rubble and pulled out their hair. The skyline was beautiful on fire, all twisted metal stretching upwards, everything washed in a thin orange haze.

I said, "Kiss me, you're beautiful; these are truly the last days". You grabbed my hand, and we fell into it. Like a daydream. Or a fever.

We woke up one morning and fell a little further down, for sure is the valley of Death. I open up my wallet and it's full of blood.

Tool - jerk off

Someone told me once that there's a right and wrong
Punishment was the cure for those who dare to cross the line
But it must not be true
For jerk-offs just like you and
Maybe it takes longer
To catch a total a-hole
But I'm tired of waiting
Someone told me once that there's a right and wrong
Punishment was the cure for those who dare to cross the line
But it must not be true
For jerk-offs just like you and
Maybe it's just bullshite
I should play God
And shoot you myself
Tired of waiting
Consequences dictate
Our course of action and it
Doesn't matter what's right
It's only wrong if you get caught
If consequences dictate
My course of action, I should
I should play God and just
Shoot you myself
Tired of waiting
Die now
Shoot it
Kick it
frick it
Shoot you in your fricking head

Tool - opiate

Choices always were a problem for you
What you need is someone strong to guide you
Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow
What you need is someone strong to guide you
Like me
Like me
Like me
Like me
If you want to get your soul to heaven
Trust in me now, don't you judge or question
You are broken now, but faith can heal you
Just do everything I tell you to do
Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow
What you need is someone strong to guide you
Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow
Let me lay my holy hand up, hand upon you
My God's will
Becomes me
When he speaks
He speaks through me
He has needs
Like I do
We both want
To rape you
Jesus Christ, why don't you come save my life now?
Open my eyes, blind me with your light now
Jesus Christ, why don't you come save my life now?
Open my eyes, blind me with your light now
If you want to get your soul to heaven
Trust in me now, don't you judge or question
You are broken now, but faith can heal you
Just do everything I tell you to do
Jesus Christ, why don't you come save my life now?
Open my eyes, blind me with your light now
Jesus Christ, why don't you come save my life now?
Open my eyes, blind me with your light now
Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow
Let me lay my holy hand up, hand upon you
My God's will
Becomes me
When he speaks
He speaks through me
He has needs
Like I do
We both want
To rape you
I had a friend once, he took some acid
Now he thinks he's a fire engine
It's okay until he pisses on your lighter
Kinda smells, kinda cool, kinda funny anyway
Satan, Satan, Satan, Satan, Satan
I had a friend once he took some ecstasy
Tried to marry me and every one in the room
He was sort of loving, kinda caring
Kinda tried to frick my La-Z-Boy
It got a bit messy all over the curtains
Arm chair covers, throw pillows, and carpeting
I'm getting bored, I'm getting bored
I'm getting bored, I'm getting bored
I'm getting bored, I'm getting bored
I'm getting bored, I'm getting bored

Tool - Right in Two

Angels on the sideline,
Puzzled and amused.
Why did Father give these humans free will?
Now they're all confused.

Don't these talking monkeys know that
Eden has enough to go around?
Plenty in this holy garden, silly monkeys,
Where there's one you're bound to divide it.
Right in two.

Angels on the sideline,
Baffled and confused.
Father blessed them all with reason.
And this is what they choose.
And this is what they choose...

Monkey killing monkey killing monkey
Over pieces of the ground.
Silly monkeys give them thumbs,
They forge a blade,
And where there's one
They're bound to divide it,
Right in two.
Right in two.

Monkey killing monkey killing monkey.
Over pieces of the ground.
Silly monkeys give them thumbs.
They make a club.
And beat their brother, down.
How they survive so misguided is a mystery.

Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability to lift an eye to heaven conscious of its fleeting time here.

Gotta divide it all right in two [4x]

Fight 'til they die over wind, over sky
They fight over life, over prayer, over air and light
Over love, over sun, over another
They fight though they die over words polarizing.

Angels on the sideline again.
Benched along with patience and reason.
Angels on the sideline again
Wondering when this tug of war will end.

Gotta divide it all right in two [3x]
Right in two!

Right in two.

He said, "I'll love you till I die"
She told him, "You'll forget in time"
As the years went slowly by
She still preyed upon his mind
He kept her picture on his wall
Went half-crazy, now and then
He still loved her through it all
Hoping she'd come back again

Kept some letters by his bed
Dated 1962
He had underlined in red
Every single 'I love you'

I went to see him just today
Oh, but I didn't see no tears
All dressed up to go away
First time I'd seen him smile in years

He stopped loving her today
They placed a wreath upon his door
And soon they'll carry him away He stopped loving her today

You know, she came to see him one last time
Oh, and we all wondered if she would
And it kept running through my mind
This time he's over her for good

He stopped loving her today
They placed a wreath upon his door
And soon they'll carry him away He stopped loving her today

And in her eyes, you see nothing
No sign of love behind the tears
Cried for no one
A love that should have lasted years

Does any one know where the love of God goes
when the waves turn the minutes to hours?
The searchers all say they'd have made Whitefish Bay
if they'd put fifteen more miles behind 'er.
They might have split up or they might have capsized;
they may have broke deep and took water.
And all that remains is the faces and the names
of the wives and the sons and the daughters.

KORN -PRETTY

So... so young.
Raped, but I don't realize.

Small white legs, broke,
the pain between her thighs

I see your pretty face,
Smashed against the bathroom floor!
What a disgrace!
Who do I feel sorry for?

Skin... so cold.
How, could someone steal a life?
Takes the blame.
Wait, I got some shite to say.

I see your pretty face,
Smashed against the bathroom floor!
What a disgrace!
Who do I feel sorry for?

Smashed and raped!
Not again. This is a real crime.
What a pretty face.
Who do I feel sorry for?

RAPE! Something... Now!
Rips my... Heart!
And takes... My!
Soul I... Wait
Too late... Now!
I feel... Hurt!
Inside... Dark!
My soul away....

Away....

I see your pretty face,
Smashed against the bathroom floor!
What a disgrace!
Who do I feel sorry for?

Smashed and raped!
Not again. This is a real crime.
What a pretty face.
Who do I feel sorry for...

It was about when the lead singer Jothan Davis was a coroner's assistant... he saw a one year old girl come in (who was obviously dead) and her dad had raped her by breaking her legs and twisting them around behind her back, and she died. Jonathan Davis had nightmares until he finally wrote this song.

“Wendell Walker” by Andy Schauf is the first thing that came to mind.
Not exactly profound, but a dark story that makes a great song.

Wendell Walker was a friend of mine.
we'd stain our teeth in the summertime,
and with lips of purple, the winter would roll
past the boarded windows into our souls
and shake our weary bones.

now this past winter was the coldest in years.
it's hard to explain if you've never lived here,
but it locks your doors and starts your mind
thinking in circles just to pass the time,
and breaks your weary heart.

now Wendell Walker was a man of God,
but he didn't care much for his sober mind,
and when the cold mixed in he was turned around
heard the voice of God and the angels sound
a message just for him:

my son, my son, she is the devil's child
won't you save her while you can
cut down the other man.

now Wendell Walker was a friend of mine,
but he married too young in the summertime.
their hearts weren't ripe so they fell apart
and I found myself with a joyful heart
as our secret lives began.

we found our moments in between the hours,
when Wendell Walker drove his car to town.
but one day he found a letter that I wrote for her
on the top of her dresser and in his winter mind
he heard the voice of God say:

my son, my son, she is the devil's child
won't you save her while you can
cut down the other man.

with the voice of the lord ringing in his ears
and the note to his wife that confirmed his fears,
he sat down on the edge of the bed
read the letter again to see who'd sent it
but it was signed 'forever yours'.

he stood up slow like he'd just been hit.
walked into the kitchen where his wife was sitting
he said, "my mother called on the telephone
she says she needs some help so I'll be back in the morning"
and he grabbed his heavy coat.

my phone rang while I was watching the news.
she said the house was ours to cure these winter blues.
so I made my way, and we turned the blinds
and Wendell walked in just in time
to see our secret die and say:

my son, my son I'm gonna have to cut you down.
he pointed his rifle to my eyes
but his hesitating hands
were shaking from the cold.
so I pushed his gun away,
just as he found his strength.
and the bullet kissed her lips
and I cried:

my god, my god what have I done?
and he reloaded his gun,
and he put it in his mouth.
and I stood in the room that I'd created.

Yeah it’s a dark one for sure. I love that track though, the music is fantastic.

Another one that just came to me is “The Viaduct Love Suicide” by Springtime. Beautiful, in a brutal sort of way.

Farewell to the world
Farewell to the night
Farewell my family
Forgive me this flight

I did my husband’s
Though with him was gone
The last of the good times
For me and our son

When I needed bread
Life gave me stones
That fairytale giant
Made bread from my bones
Hard our communion
A stone for a host
My son you’re so special
So different to most

But most take against
The different as strange
With names if not stones
They take their revenge

But we’re turning to air
That no stone can touch
You made my life, son
I love you so much

And she stepped from the bridge
With her child in her arms
To join with the earth
No providence harms

And wind from the wheat fields
Blows through Bridgehill
And the last light of evening
Falls on Blackhill

And it falls on High Westwood
And Hamsterly Mill
And Newlands and Allensford
And over Swalwell
It falls still on Consett
And Leadgate and Delves
This song is over
Look after yourselves

Wicked Soul by Another Black Day

Here I am alone
Broken by my ghosts
Will they always haunt me when I'm drowning?

Shattered by my pride
Married to my guilt
And the road I walk is paved with sorrow

I've lost again
Dark days arise
Will I find the light?

Will you save my wicked soul?
If I swear that I'll change my ways

Will you save my wicked soul?
If I swear that I'll change my ways

Staring at my wounds
That I once had closed
Will they always burn me when I'm drowning?

Fighting for my pride
Try to shed my guilt
I've become a vessel for your torment

I've lost again
Dark days arise
Will I find the light?

Will you save my wicked soul
If I swear that I'll change my ways

Will you save my wicked soul
If I swear that I'll change my ways

Will you save my wicked soul
If I swear that I'll change

Will you save my wicked soul
If I swear that I'll change my ways

Save me save me
Won't you save my soul?

Hole - Miss World.

I am the girl you know, can't look you in the eye
I am the girl you know, so sick I cannot try
I am the one you want, can't look you in the eye
I am the girl, you know I lie, I lie and lie
I'm miss world, somebody kill me
Kill me pills
No one cares, my friends
My friend
I'm miss world, watch me break and watch me burn
No one is listening, my friend
Now I've made my bed, I'll lie in it
I've made my bed, I'll die in it
I've made my bed, I'll lie in it
I've made my bed, I'll die in it
Cute girls watch when I eat ether
Suck me under
Maybe forever, my friends
Yeah
Now I've made my bed, I'll lie in it
I've made my bed, I'll die in it
I've made my bed, I'll die in it
I've made my bed, I'll cry in it
I've made my bed, I'll lie in it
I've made my bed, I'll cry in it
I've made my bed, I'll die in it
I've made my bed, I'll lie in it, my friend
I am the girl you know, can't look you in the eye
