14 year old American soccer star signs $5 million deal with Manchester City

Don't move this to the soccer board, I believe this is a good conversation in the age of NIL for non soccer sport fans.
Litle more nuanced, he signs a deal with the Philadelphia Union of MLS as well, where he will play until he transfers to Manchester City of the EPL at the age of 18. The City deal has already been inked. This move allows Philadelphia to receive a transfer fee of sorts. Obviously City doing City things by throwing around oil money at prospects, but this is the most notable signing since Freddy Adu at the age of 14 back in 2003.

What’s this have to do with NIL?

I watched a video on this last night, apparently they were going to send him to a 2nd division team in Belgium (Lommel SK).
This way Philly gets to wet their beak, but how much better the development is remains to be seen. He's on their MLS Next team currently. His brother starts for the big club.
There is a chance he's shipped off to Girona when he's 16 though.

And I get that you don’t have to be a great league to consistently funnel players over to the big boys (most South American leagues are arse)
I would just rather him play against kids of similar talent

Please send this garbage to the pointless board that it belongs to

How'd that work out?

For Freddy? Not great.
For MLS? Awesome. It was a nice novelty in the present which the league desperately needed to capture some attention and, in the time since, MLS teams have been a lot more willing to give 15 and 16 year olds full pro contracts, accelerating the development of the American player and opening the door for European teams to continue that devel once they turn 18.

Call me crazy but I’d rather live in 95% of cities in Europe playing futbol than Philly, especially playing soccer where it’s king there and it’s a second thought in Philly.

Nothing wrong with a footie thread here every now and then considering that we have to deal with golf threads here.

A kid my brother played with was drafted at 16, 3 years before Adu. Eddie turned out better than Freddie.
