Griff started off with a roster of Zion, AD and Jrue.

And it’s been half a decade, we rarely get to the playoffs and when we do, get bounced in the first round.
Numerous teams behind us, started off with way way less assets and are much further along. Griff has done less with more than any gm I can remember. And the team still doesn’t have any direction. Wish we had someone like Presti.

Can't argue with the results.

What we should have done is immediately blown it up, traded Jrue at the same time as AD, and just been fricking awful with Zion and BI I guess.
But I do think Griff got marching orders not to go full Tank.

AD and Zion never wore the same uniform at the same time. They weren't ever really on a roster together.

He hasn’t been good enough. He’s too scared to make proactive moves with this team which keeps us in purgatory. His drafting philosophy is questionable. We’ve wasted like 3 firsts on bigs who either don’t fit with Zion or the head coach doesn’t like playing and we’ll probably spend more assets on another big this summer.

You are arguing semantics. True. They never played together. He had the number one pick which everyone knew was going to be Zion. He could have held on to AD if he wanted to and those three would have been on the roster at the same time, correct? He choose to trade AD.
Point remains, he was gifted the number one pick with two generational talents at the top. An all NBA player in his prime, and an all star guard in his prime. And what do we have to show for it?

Toni had one foot out his final season. I don't know how much of a choice this was. Toni wanted to play with Lebron and he forced the trade. I guess you could have kept him one more year, but he likely would have sat on the bench and we would have gotten zero in return when he left the next year.

I hated Davis. But if you look back, how do trade both Davis and Holiday away? They won rings the next two years. You would have to keep both at least a season and see how they work with Zion. We could still trade both the next summer, and we rob the Lakers of their "title." Win/win.

He would have gone full Harden if we kept him, sat out with fake injuries, then we wouldn't have gotten Hart, Lonzo, BI, any of the picks, or CJ.
Saying Griff had Zion and AD at the same time intellectually dishonest. It's not a real argument.

It's simple. Zion's injuries have delayed the progression of the franchise. Nothing more. And I'm still very pro Zion. The only real mistake I would say Griff made was not taking Garland. But at the same time, as you've said, we already had Jrue, Lonzo, JJ, and Josh Hart that season. Who knows if Garland has the same trajectory playing 12 minutes a night his first 2 years instead of 30+.

I promise you can make good arguments against David Griffin without being intellectually dishonest with the framing

I’m not arguing that he should not have traded AD. He chose the package and what team to trade him to. You are missing the entire point. The point is Griff had all three to do what he pleased with. And we are no better now than before he arrived.

But he was an all star and good enough to be the number 3 on a championship team. I’m arguing about what he had at the time in trade value. They weren’t broken down and old. Both were in their prime and top assets jeez.

I still do not really understand trading Jrue only to acquire CJ fourteen months later.

Jrue asked for the trade and he would not re-sign here

There’s no intellectually dishonest argument. He had all three. Lots of players request trades and gms decline to do so. It has happened a number of times. Would it have been smart, probably not.

It's definitely a hugely flawed argument.

Is this a joke? You realize AD gave up on the team midway through the season and requested a trade and wore a "that's all folks" shirt on the bench in his last game right? It's dumb to think he could have kept AD.

It’s not all on Griff. It starts with AD flaking out on us. And everybody put too much faith in Zion even before and during the draft. We don’t know what deals Griff tried but just didn’t have the assets that the right teams wanted.

I don’t remember the details, but Julius Randle was in the door as well and left that off season for NY. We may not have had any rights, but nonetheless Julius Randle walked out the door and Derrick Favors walked in. Bad swap.

Not taking up for Griffin in any way, but his hands were tied in regards to the AD trade. Rich Paul declaring that AD would only sign an extension with LA severely dampened what teams were willing to give up, hence why he went with the "best" deal on the table
