20-30 years ago sure. The coast has been invaded by northeasterners and upstate by midwesterners.

There's a reason they call Alabama the "Heart of Dixie".

While south La likes to say North La isn’t “Louisiana” it is quintessential old South..at least from Ruston over to Tallulah. When I think south I think Mississippi/Alabama/South Georgia. In my mind I just can’t classify Texas as “southern” and Florida has too many snowbirds to be southern(my opinion)

South Louisiana elected Blanco and JBE. That disqualifies them.

It’s Mississippi.
In the Deep South
Completely surrounded by deep red states
Unhealthy food is a religion
Rivals West Virginia for poorest state
The state’s flagship university, the Ole Miss Rebels, boasts two offensive names in one.

Aside from the accents, how is South LA not Southern? Literally the same exact people, just different accents
Cajuns are not what people think of when thinking of The South.. The French Catholics of New Orleans are not what people think of when thinking of The South. Louisiana's major cultures are not quintessentially Southern.
The answer is Mississippi followed closely by Alabama and South Carolina.

I’d have to say that South Carolina is in strong consideration Nikki Haley excepted
Alabama deserves consideration
Louisiana is not because it has strong cultural influences from Caribbean, French and Spanish that overshadow the typical Anglo influence
New Orleans has become overwhelmingly Afro centric which is southern but probably not along the lines of what the OP intended

I think it's La. The Basin area with the coonasses. We're the only of our kind in the world. There's rednecks everywhere.....whether it's Alabama, Miss, Florida or Arkansas.

Sc, Alabama and Mississippi all have strong arguments. Every one else is not even close....
Eta: I asked my kid who's been to 35 of the 50 states (+ DC) and his first answer was "Texas." Then I said, "Not geographically (he loves maps), but who's people best represent southern culture?" His immediate answer was "South Carolina."

Alabama, Mississippi or Tennessee.

It’s not Louisiana, Texas, or Arkansas.
You’ve got 3 regions in the greater south.
1. South Central West
2. South Central East
3. South Atlantic
Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas and Oklahoma are included in #1. Take it up with the US Census Bureau
There’s a few ways to slice it. You can go east to west regional or north to south regional. By north to south it would go:
1. Gulf south
2. Mid south
3. Upper south
Louisiana would fall in #1 & #2 by using that metric. It’s easiest to just go east to west
