When I heard this song on the radio as a kid, I always imagined a brunette white woman.

I always assumed Sam Smith was black.

Wild Cherry - Play That Funky Music
*Yes, I know it's "Play That Funky Music, White Boy" but he doesn't sound white

I was quite young, but even then I was legit surprised by The Righteous Brothers being white.

Bobby Caldwell is #1. I’ve got to throw in the guys from Surfaces. Not only are they white, but they might be the whitest guys on the planet.

"The Righteous Brothers" the original "Blue Eyed Soul" duo.
Lots of black people hearing them for the first time thought they had to be black with the way they sang.
One of my all-time favorite videos is one from the old "Andy Williams Show" that was first aired in 1965 and featured Bobby Hatfield singing their hit song "Unchained Melody".
It was a solo he performed and it was just a man, his mic, the shows band and a live audience. Pure magic.
