What happened to actually writing and telling funny jokes?

I think this is partly the fault of the crowd too. People wanting their 5 seconds of fame.

Tim Wilson may have been the best ever at working the crowd.

good comedians have some crowd work and some jokes

but there are classic comedians who were mostly crowd work people.

It can be good. Don Rickles is one of the best ever and he did almost exclusively crowd work.

You're right. Dave Portnoy to John Mulaney for comedy is a terrible comparison.

Well it wasn't a direct comparison of course

I'm just saying that I enjoy the "presentation" that both provide. And that in the stand up realm, that part of it, how they do their schtick, mannerisms, etc. is probably more determinative of whether I watch their stuff repeatedly than the quality/my interest in the underlying content itself (in stand up, the jokes).

You can only talk about funny subjects once?

I feel like anyone who talks about anything funny is probably building off of someone else who has talked about the same subject before.

Some of the “evidence” on Dane Cook lacks a lot of substance.

The "working it out" stuff happens at the later shows for the semi known people. Not gonna lie. It was dang near 50/50 whether they was gonna get booed by some drunks. Seen some mediocre sets come through there even by Attell at 1AM.

Mark Normand is one of the funniest comedians out there, but his “working it out” stuff sucks

No, I got the joke.

I just don’t subscribe to the status quo of “Dane Cook is bad because he steals jokes” camp.

I think Matt Rife is pretty funny for the most part, but i also think he's a one trick pony.

I think some of his stuff is pretty funny but notice that he repeats EVERYTHING that someone in the crowd says. Maybe it's so everyone else can hear it but, by god, is it annoying.

Brad Williams is now my favorite. Dude is fricking hilarious.

Dude met his wife on a Tinder three-way set up, she shows up and the other girl didn't. He wound up marrying her.

He does a bit about multiple three-ways he and his wife have been part of.

Nate Bargatze is the top comedian working now. He's been on a tear for 3-4 years.

I would say podcasts ruined standup. They use all of their material on the podcast and that leads to having to do crowd work.

It seems that people are under the impression that crowd work isn't practiced/or comes right off the top of the comic's head. They mostly run through the same lines with each crowd, changing them slightly to fit the moment.

Nah, it just goes viral the most.

I think we have a ton of big comics right now that are funny on podcasts, but aren't as good on stage.

I think Joe Rogan, who isn't that good of a comic IMO, having such a huge orbit around him hurts the "art" "space" or whatever you want to call it. He sees them, likes them personally, gets them on the pod to boost their profile, and then they are huge without having really earned it. Mediocrity breeds mediocrity.
