re: Letter Sent Out by School Principal About Testing

The problem with this email is that it disregards the notion of being well-rounded. Sure, athletes don’t need to know physics, but somewhere out there is an athlete who also knows physics, and an artist who understands math, and an entrepreneur who loves literature. And guess what? Kids who are only good at one thing… have to compete with well-rounded people like this in the real world. People who can do the things that kid does best… AND other stuff too. Those people are out there.
I don’t understand the desire of so many to only be educated at the one thing they are going to make money at… and nothing else.

The artist the doesn't understand mat is called a starving artist.

Doesn't seem that bad. I get the message.
The key is knowing your child's potential in the various subjects and judging them against that not some amorphous level of perfection. It is no different than judging them on their athletic performance. Not every kid has the potential to start for their high school team just like every kid has the potential to get an A in AP Chem. It is hard enough to get a child to perform near their potential, at least in something they don't have a true passion for, but expecting performance above their potential is both impossible and destructive.

Nothing to see here, just a school administrator essentially telling parents that education isn't important.

There is a pedo who doesn’t care about any of that shite as long as they get to ‘give the test’…

These aren’t AP tests. They’re basic standards tests.
Artists, entrepreneurs, athletes, and musicians are all better off knowing basic standards in all of these subjects. This is the principal covering his arse for running a shitty school who also isn’t allowed to just blame the parents.
“Don’t worry parents, we failed these kids together” is the wrong message.
He should be saying “if your kids can’t pass these tests, here’s our plan to get them up to speed to where they should be and we need your help.”

The systematic dumbing down of an entire generation.
All we do is make excuses for those who don’t want to work and frame the wording to sound just a little better to fool the prior generation of jerk offs who also slacked off.
tell your kiddos the truth. You can love some things but they aren’t practical as careers. Those are called hobbies. If you get a hobby job that doesn’t pay well you have to be willing to live within the means that it provides, daddy and mommy aren’t subsidizing your Hulu subscription or paying your car insurance.
Problem is this is where 95% of parents buckle.
Learn how to say no.

Democrats are dragging us down to where our education requirements are less than what is found in 3rd world countries.
The disintegration is real.

Parents should reply:
Then when little Jaxton can't cut it in junior college baseball I'll have him come live with you so you can support his uneducated arse...

I mean, that’s a pretty good message. Standardized testing does not determine anyone’s worth or path in life. If anything, standardized testing needs to be done away with. It’s worthless and is a poor measure of a person’s intelligence.

I agree 100 on this.
The problem is we focus on all these students who have no direction at home thus ignoring the many many many students in this great country who are absolutely crushing education.
It sucks for most people but you cannot buy smarts.

I want a financial planner who understands math and marketing and economics do not care if he can read a 4-3 defense or break up a screen pass much less whether he prefers Monet or Reuben except as investments.

Asians aren’t anxious about their children performing well on tests. They’re confident that they put enough pressure on the kids that the kids know what will happen if they don’t do well.

Typical work from home, bare minimum society. It’s important to be well rounded as youths and to train, teach the brain to learn even if it’s something one has no interest in at the time.
Guess what, you don’t go through life only doing what you want to do all the time. Sometimes, you have to roll up your sleeves and wear multiple hats and help pull the companies weight.
I haven’t used thermodynamics or performed differential equation math since graduating, but it taught me how to learn, how to solve problems, and not just give up because I ‘wasn’t in the mood’.
The work from home society will be the death of America.

This is kinda where I am. I get it in asking parents not to freak out over a bad score but, you have to have some way of evaluating a students progress and I don't know how you do that without testing.

So now we are hating on people who are trying to remind parents that testing doesn't define them? How many people struggled with standardized testing but did well in school? How often does the OT bitch about teachers who threaten kids with testing, "Fail this, and you will be a failure!"
I get the message, and it applies to a ton of stuff; look at travel ball parents who think their child is the next Mike Trout or Roger Clemens or parents of some of these elite football/basketball teams who believe they have the next Jordan or Brady, it is absurd how parents act to their kid's failure instead of trying to help them many belittle.
