its a simple math problem.
if your wife makes more than daycare costs, significantly more, then both work.
we have two kids in daycare. my wife makes a pretty sweet salary. I've had a few good years, but those are slowing down (sales).
when both kids get out of daycare, we will be oprah rich. but for now, just chill at the house and eat in and take vacations that grand parents pay for

They can easily live on one salary, but clearly they want a standard of living that isn't conducive to that. Can't have your cake and eat it too.

It depends on what the old lady will be doing for work and how many kids. No point in going to a $16/hr job and just using it to pay for daycare. The moms should just do like other millenials and start an OF page.

Your math ain't mathing. What do you think this is? 2019 or something?

Now, Americans must earn roughly $106,500 in order to comfortably afford a typical home, a significant increase from the $59,000 annual household income that put homeownership within reach for families in 2020, according to new research from digital real estate company Zillow.
I imagine if you live in Houston Metro, Austin, DFW, that dollar figure average is much higher

Idk. It is more than that. My wife made good money but had crazy hrs. She quit for more family time. She eventually went back to work for her own business with more flexibility. Now we’re doing well with both kids in school and she has 100% ability to adjust her schedule around activities.
Kids need parents and dumping them in after school care 5 days a week is not a good recipe.
We are fortunate it worked out like that.

This generation should stop bitching and just tighten those bootstraps!

When my kids were small my wife didn’t work. Then part time when early school years now back full time
I don’t know how people make it with both working. Her being avail for all kid running was invaluable

This isn’t a necessity everywhere.

Schedule flexibility. More people working means employers have to be more accommodating. Plus with the rise of WFH I think there are more industries that have come around to a "we don't really care when it gets done, just get it done" approach.

I think you and I got berated for saying that in the 30A spring break thread.
I think you are correct though. A lot of older people I know did minimal travel until they were 50 or 60+ and had saved a ton.

My nephew (late 30's) has 4 kids and his wife is a school teacher... I believe he is a salesman.. I have no idea of their income but I would imagine all their money goes every month.
My niece (early 40's), his sister, has 5 kids but her husband is a heart surgeon and not sure if she works. Big uptown house and in the middle of major renovation. Even with his salary it's got to be tight. All the kids go to Newman.

I know, I was just comparing what my dad was able to do at his income level to what folks now would be able to do.

People have 4 kids these days? Seems like 2 is now the norm

Yeah, I'm not trying to make a moral judgment here or romanticize prior eras. I do have my positions on that stuff, but it's not my point.
I think there is zero legit argument that the modern generations do everything bigger and spend more money on the "now" for better or worse. Which I think naturally makes it more of a challenge to have a SAHM without some considerable changes to the outlook/philosophy.

Well my parents didn't have cell phones, Netflix, food delivery services, crossfit gym memberships, lawncare services, etc.
