My friend group has a new topic in hand: single income family

They all have solid jobs (6 figure plus) in Texas but now all have a kid to multiple kids and told their spouse that it’s unsustainable for single income. Kinda crazy our parents didn’t have to deal with this. The wives took it ok though since they all knew this was the expectation but the old days are dead even in the south

We could have made it on one income but the health insurance for the family would have made things super, super tight.

My wife got a great offer to go back and the add-on of her having health insurance for her and the kids made it a no-brainer.

you can still do it, just have to live like you only have 1 income.

stop trying to keep up with others and comparing yourself to others

oh and your threads still suck dick and you lie about how much you make

nobody as dumb as you makes the kind of money you claim

The wives were working but now they wont be?

It isn't hard to have a single income household and you dont need to make six figures to do it. You just gotta get rid of the whole entitlement syndrome within the family to live comfortably.

The single income family has been becoming more and more rare for decades. It can be done, but you will just have to live in a less expensive house, buy reliable cars and drive them forever, seldom go out to eat or go to concerts, and curtail other optional expenses.

It's great for the kids, but many are unwilling to make the sacrifice.

I mean with daycare expenses it’s not a strong trade off for someone making below 60k imo. A mother wants to be with the kids

and stop getting addicted to monthly subscriptions. You dont need Netflix, Prime, Hulu, Dinsey+, etc. That crap kills a single income budget. Same with cell phone plans. You can get by with $10 MVNO plans like Tello for cell phones.

Seems people are more transient these days, so less growing up around multi generational neighborhoods thus adding to childcare expense.

Inflation is also a pain in the arse, but I do also think culturally our generation spends a lot more than my parents' generation when it comes to things like travel, entertainment, etc. Both parents working is the trade off to all of the above.

Of course, that's not necessary, but then the parents would be trading off living where they want to live, traveling where they want to, etc. all the things mentioned above.

Idk I feel this is probably reason why nursing homes are so full. We just don’t respect our families as much due to pressure for $

I'm guessing a solid portion of the problem is that a lot of guys making high enough incomes to justify/consider this - in modernity - married women with reasonably good earning potential. If they're each making 200k, then while it may be possible to move to one income, you've got two potentially accomplished types accustomed to certain things needing to move down to decidedly middle class life (in big metros, at least).

My mom quit working before I was born We lived pretty well, never wanted for anything and did plenty of fishing/hunting with my dad. Blew my mind when my dad told me he didn't top 6 figures until 2002. He is really freaking good with money, though.

Just looked it up and that's $173k adjusted for inflation. Seems like that'd be a tough amount to send 4 kids to private school, college, and retire early on today.

The concept of pushing it down the line and delayed gratification for the success of future generations is changed if not lost. Treat yourself, you deserve it, can't take it with you, etc. - those are mainstream concepts so it's silly when some act like they haven't contributed to how our society views this stuff.

I make 130k (An OT butler salary apparently). I have a wife, three kids, dog, and cat that bring in $0/year. We have to make some sacrifices, but we are managing fine. Old cars, follow a strict budget, fixer-upper house, and homeschool.

People love to convince themselves that a single income household is impossible. It’s not. Depends on what you value in life. Period.

The daycare would need to be charging $2k/ea and you'd need 3 kids for this to be considered a trade-off. Only if she was working, mom could have 401k, benefits, etc

Mom needs to be with the kid for the first few months of life. After that, both can adjust and live perfectly happy, enriching lives.
