I had forgotten just how integral Silver is to everything. He seems like the catalyst that moves things forward time and time again.
Silvers character development and overall arc is top tier in any/all mediums. Incredibly well done. I’ll add more details as yall progress.
Started a rewatch as soon as I saw it pop up on Netflix and have blown through almost all of it before seeing this thread.

This show is good because Flint and Vane are good. I'm in season 3. The season 2 finale is the high point so far.
The women are bad. The blond chick, the pirate chick, and the eyeliner chick just do NOT carry the gravitas they need to. The long annoying monologues by the eyeliner chick get really annoying. Her voice is annoying.
The one good actress is the older woman that Flint has on the side.

Introducing a famous pirate S3e1 in the opening scene was pretty awesome.
There have been actual famous pirates all up in S1.
ETA I’ll have more to add when I get in front of a computer later today.

I hate that we lose Gates so early in the series. I get why Flint did it, but man talk about the worst way to prove to your crew that you're loyal to them....by killing your quartermaster and one of your best friends and closest confidants. RIP, Gates. What an awesome character.
When I was reading up on the actors I saw he was only in for 8 so I knew his time was coming to an end but now I hate the way he went out. I mean I get it but damn.
I feel like gates was the best guy out of all of the pirates. He knew that being loyal to the captain was equally as important to looking out for what was best for the crew and did his best to fulfill both roles. Even with looking out for Billy.
You can see that he and Flint were good friends and had a great amount of respect for one another. Same with him and Hornigold.
Gates has been around for a while and proved he was a quality dude, at least when it came to being a pirate.
While reading episode summaries I saw that Dufresnes tattoo was of a shark bite, didn’t catch that while watching.
I still don’t know why Albinus was proud of Vane? Coming back after successfully escaping? Was Vane really seeing Albinus or was that visions of him that caused Vane to go back?
I’m also watching these episodes while working so I do miss some things here or there.
Also was it the crew of the walrus and revenge looting the urca gold or was that the Spanish guys picking it up?

That sucks.
That's such a great scene when Flint kills Gates:
"You think I'm inciting a mutiny?"
"You are inciting a mutiny."
"I'M MANAGING ONE!"

Vane was seeing visions of Albinus which made him go back to the island. And Albinus was proud of him because he knows what kind of life he had on that island. He was basically saying it takes a strong man to leave and then come back, so he was proud of him in that way (not in a "but I won't kill you now" kind of way). And in his mind he was the one who made Vane strong and what he is today.

It's the Urca crew with their gold. They were all pissed off when the Urca wasn't in the inlet they thought it would be in. But like Silver said, they didn't account for the bad weather, which is why the Urca was partially destroyed and beached nearby. And they were unloadng the gold onto the beach (with the Spanish man-o-war crew as well I assume).

EP 7
It was. I didn't realize it until this rewatch but I think everything before then had basically no time jumps. Like the first 6 episodes happen in 6 days. Unless a episode review I read was wrong in saying that.
I seriously hate that dude, partly for his quick advancement. I know this is obviously fictional but it has a very "real" feel to it. One of the bigger non realistic parts to me is Dufresne going from a puss bookkeeper with. what appears to be little to know pirating and definitely know fighting and leadership skills to quartermaster in a weeks period. I get that they probably did nominate who they thought would be the smartest person as a quartermaster and there probably isn't a whole lot of brains floating around a pirate ship, but you probably had to earn your keep, and he hadn't really done anything.
Correction, this is probably the most unrealistic thing so far Maybe his little odd shape body helped with being able to dig himself out.
EP 8
Yea this one was tough. He was for sure one of the best characters at that point. Rackham is my favorite character, but Gates was probably a better character, I was legit surprised he was killed off so early. At this point in the show, Black Sails is essentially Game of Thrones with killing characters, literally no one is safe from being killed off.
Also the limited CGI makes it so much better. They use it sparingly (usually just shots of the ships cruising out in the ocean) and it's definitely for the better.
Flints strategy was so good there and Dufresne screwed it up. If I'm on the ship though and 100 cannons open up I'm abandoning ship before they fire. I mean it takes some serious balls to stand there on a ship and take that fire. That Spanish ship was so badass.

I love how fast Dufresne went from scared accountant to kind of a badass. I guess going into your first battle and ripping throats with your teeth changes a man.
And Dufresne is already making plans to kill Flint once they have the Urca. Pretty ballsy.

Vane digging himself up and killing Albinus is cool and all, but he's been buried for the better part of a day. He should've died HOURS ago

I absolutely love all of the maritime warfare. It's just cool as shite to see some of the strategies they used and how war worked back then.

I’m with you , I hate Dufresne, great show, great idea for this thread, this is my first watch.

For those on their initial watch, Dufresne’s actor is replaced in season 2 due to an illness with the original actor. Worry not, for the new actor is just as good.

Wow. I thought it was some time lapsed/hardening of the actor. I knew something was different, but didn't recognize a completely new person.

while Dufresne is not as major a player, I remember when they had to replace Spartacus and the second guy had 0 of the gravitas as the OG. They even made up an unnecessary (but awesome) backstory season to try and give him time to recover. RIP Andy Whitfield.

SPOILERS for beginning of Season 2.......
lets discuss Ned Lowe. I loved the fact that he seemed to be the big bad of the season and then Vane takes care of business It was this moment when Vane won me over as I didn't care for him in season 1.
"He doesn't work here any more" one of my top 3 bad arse moments in the series.

Vane’s character arch is incredible. I think you’re in the majority with not liking him at first then becoming a fan of his. He only continues to get better as a character and has one of the best quotes about freedom maybe ever on TV.

I'd tried watching Black Sails a couple of times in the past with the wife, but she never got into it so we never got past episode 2 or 3. I finally just started watching it on my own and damn is it awesome. I'm on Season 2 episode 3 (I think). Vane just solved the Ned Low problem and he's definitely taken a step forward in likability in my book.
I still think my favorite character is Jack Rackham. He steals every scene he's in. I'm waiting for his new endeavor to pick up so he can have more adventures. Also, Silver has grown on me a lot from the first few episodes.
